You're probably right. I think I originally heard it from my stepmother's father, who was a political agent for Churchill, whatever that is, and quite likely misremembered it.

Come on chaps... How come no one's stepped in to say that it's ok to start with a preposition.... It's ending a sentence with a preposition that's frowned upon. Winston Churchill is reputed to have said " that's the sort of behaviour up with which I will not put".

A fair few, I haven't actually kept count.

Majority of those who can be bothered to get embroiled in often hate-fuelled arguments, maybe.

It's not really essential to the meaning. If you wrote "to who shall I send the subscription" you'd still be understood, even though you'd started a sentence with a preposition...

    GBS, wasn't it?

If you're really not sure about the difference between "who* and "whom", stick with who. It's generally forgiven if you use "who" when it should be "whom", but you look like a todger if you use "whom " when it should be "who". IMO.

Eats shoots and leaves(eats roots and leaves, when I first heard the underlying joke from an Australian I used to work with), is more about commas, isn't it?

That was my sentence where "whom" was essential to the meaning.

Can you explain the difference between "who" and "whom"?

    Electric vehicles

We have an Outlander PHEV, tiny electric range because it's very hilly round here, but usually enough for 80% of our trips. Also have solar PV, so charge while the sun's shining. Wouldn't suit everyone, but a good fit for us. Very nice to drive in EV mode, as well. Recently test drove a few...

    No Fault Evictions

Re. Millionaires leaving in droves, the numbers are largely made up. Tim Harford looked into it in "More or less". I know, BBC left wing liars... Get your facts from social media or the Daily Mail.

    No Fault Evictions

This is hilarious. Your Tories effed up so monumentally that Labour couldn't fail to get elected, and now you're all whinging about it, and using silly playground names for members of that party. Keep it up, it's very entertaining.

    Two QUICK Shop TIPS:

How? Doesn't the bottle's tendency to relax into its original shape reduce the pressure in the bottle, making it easier for the carbon dioxide to come out of solution? I can see how it might help if you squeezed the air out and kept it squeezed with a cable tie or something...

I try, usually successfully, not to let any of it upset me. Why raise your blood pressure over anything so trivial?

    Adjustable reamer chatter

Takes me back.. I redid the kingpins on my '59 Rover 105 over 50 years ago, but luckily I new a chap from the pub who worked at Mayhew and Green, a P4 specialist in Surbiton, and was able to borrow the correct reamer.
