Japanese planes - anyone here use them? Experiences?

Hi, as I continue my downward rush along the slope, I have been considering adding a proper Japanese plane to my collection. The client on a recently completed job, gave me the following book as a thank you: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Japane ... 957&sr=8-1 and I have been reading with...

    THAT 4C

Very nice Jim, my favourite style and type range as well, I prefer the low knobs. Re the cleaning etc, myself, I go a little further, I like to have the screws etc all cleaned up and the finish on the handles perfect, and off course no dirt and rust, but I do like to leave the cap irons and...

    floor joists and plumbing

You could also remove sections of joist to give the clearance and replace with trimmers and or doubled up sections to provide open area to run the pipe in. In the same way you would form an opening in a floor for a staircase, but smaller.... PS< the pumped waste solutions are great, but are not...

    where's all the carpenters gone?

I agree, wages too low. My guys all earn £140 plus a day. Most would want an incentive too work away as well. Hope that helps. Cheers, Mark

    pricing and quotes

I have been fitting kitchens for everyone from Bulthaup to B&Q for 12 years. The big sheds will charge a client between £2500 and £6000 for a typical fit, depending on the extent of the works involved. I would get 60% of this. This figure would nearly always include all plumbing and electrical...

A life of vice (my new bench)

Hi Douglas, those benchcrafted vises are soooo gorgeous though.... I feel your pain, I really wanted one for my bench , but the thought of spending out that kind of dosh on one of two vices, kinda made me wince. But each time I see a picture of those polished wheels, i can imagine the feel of it...

hey Doug, I think you know the answer to the question...it's like the old anti heroin adverts from the eighties ( you remember.." Myford in Administration

First small piece: A walnut & azobe box - COMPLETED!!

OK, somewhat belatedly and having dismissed the missus's idea of hinges, its finished, I used french polish and found a nice amber coloured knob for the top. The only thing left to do is stick a nice piece of nappa leather to the underside of the lid, so it does not scratch when you put it down...
