That's beautiful mate, you could have gone thinner but no need really, the trick to thin walls is to do it in sections of about an inch at a time, get it to the thickness you want and move on, once you move on don't return to the top no matter how tempting it is to do a final pass, the wood will...

Get yourself a diamond sharpening card, I got mine from axminster, I use it to renew the edge of my steel a few times before going back to the grinder, your gouge will last much longer this way.

Oh and just a small thing, SWMBO cousin lives in Jersey and suggested that as she lives near one of the only celebrities that I will completely fangirl over perhaps I should make something to celebrate his upcoming fatherhood so this little baby rattle made of birch and a couple others I've not...

2 turnings today, firstly I completed my balance game, decided to put the base back on the lathe and open up the inside some more by undercutting the rim into the chunky side wall, also made it a bit deeper, needed to do this to fit all the game pieces inside. Then I started on a gift for our...

The tip of the parting tool has a lot less material than the tip of a gouge so can heat up quicker, try a slower speed and don't forget to widen the cut, plunging the tip straight in produces a lot of friction, especially with your style of parting tool (flat sides) a diamond parting tool...

Dust is a huge problem, I have a twin motor camvac for when I'm sanding but it's very loud and sits right next to the lathe, even with that I get a layer of fine dust covering everything by the next day, I plan to add a ceiling mounted air cleaner eventually but at around Β£200 it's gonna be a...

As @pat from Marck says definitely need a sharp edge for Oak, it's an extremely hard wood when dry but well worth the effort. Get some pics posted would love to see what you've created so far, where abouts in Hamts are you? I'm just across the border near Farnborough Surrey.

Nothing wrong with softwood just don't want you to get discouraged from it's difficulties, a razor sharp edge will produce clean cuts. Ash is beautiful to turn, when wet it turns pink as you cut it, once dry make sure your tools are sharp and sharpen often, it has a gorgeous golden chatoyance...

Some advice if I may, practice with hardwoods rather than softwood, softwood like pine can be very hard to get a clean cut without tearout, resulting in a lot of sanding and possibly losing interest.

Had the shavings and CA filled them fully I'd probably be happy with them, on the other hand those that make it to the shop will be at a low price point individually or as sets with a bit of paint and a brush in a box.

Finished the play pieces for my balance game with a good soak in teak oil (prefer Danish but don't have any at the minute) then batched out a load more sCrap wood snowmen, not sure if I like the cracks or not in some of them.

    Porch Pirates

I used to have a bat by the door for just in case until my godson who is a MET officer pointed out that having it there for protection shows intent and pre meditation should I ever use it, he also suggested that if I do intend to keep it there I should put a knee length sock over it so if an...
