    Calling all wadkin PK owners

Bump. This one went off topic real fast #-o Anybody got Wadkin PK tags and pictures to share? Cheers, Vann.

    Wadkin PK gearbox lubricant?

I'm in a similar position. I've just acquired a Wadkin PK and would like to use correct lubricants. The Maintenance Instructions suggest: Grease: Wadkin Grade L.6 Alteranative grease: Shell NERITA GREASE 3; GARGOYLE GREASE BRB 3; REGAL STARFAK No.2 GREASE. Oil: Wadkin Grade L.4 Alternatively...

Clico - End of an Era

As I understand it Clico is dead. It's now 8 months since they went into liqudation. I would guess that if someone had taken it over as a going concern we'd have heard - but I presume the few remaining staff have now dispersed to other jobs or retirement. If you like their tooling, buy up what...

    Gloat thread.

Hi Toby. I bought a saw too. Only mine says "Wadkin" on the side, and has a tail (or will do after the sparky has been), so I'm not allowed to talk about in the hand tools section (hammer) Cheers, Vann.

    So annoyed with myself :(

It feels bad when a nice new tool gets damaged. But all tools get battle scars sooner or later - and yours just got one sooner. No lasting harm done (it just won't look as nice), but tools are made for using, not looking at. Carry on. Cheers, Vann.

    British Low Angle Block Plane

    Signature corrected  Cheers, Vann.

    British Low Angle Block Plane

Things are very quite. Maybe nobody likes the new plane? :? I hope that's not the case. Some of us have been waiting a long time to see this plane, and by a stroke of luck it has been launched just at a time when I have some extra cash to splash. Cheers, Vann.

Yeah nah, our dollar is not quite that far down the toilet (yet) Cheers, Vann.

    Red Knob and Tote

Rather than varnish, consider oiling (BLO) and waxing. Varnish looks good, oil and wax feels good. I've only tried it on my rough old No.4 so far, but I like the result. Something to think about anyway... Cheers, Vann.

    Red Knob and Tote

Aha, that stirs another recollection. Rexmill, a site for dating USA made Stanleys says... ...refering to type 17 planes made 1942-1945 (WW2). But I'm assuming the OP is refering to a UK made plane? Cheers, Vann.

    Red Knob and Tote

Ahh, here we go. No need to get cold - I took a few photos last September. Firstly, I was wrong about the colour of the early "Acorns" - seems they were brown. note the difference in the frog seats. The later (red - RH) Acorn has frog seats like the second Bailey type (horizontal, all on one...

    Red Knob and Tote

I can't be sure, but I've never heard of red handles on a Stanley. If I was a betting man I'd put my money on a previous owner having applied that paint. I believe it was JA Chapman that Stanley took over in 1936. Chapman made a line of planes labelled "Acorn". Again I'm not sure, but I believe...

    British Low Angle Block Plane

Looking forward to your impression of it Peter. Or yours Paul. Yes, I'm intending to purchase one for my 60th birthday later in the year, but they're not cheap, and before I commit my hard earned cash, I have a few reservations that I voiced privately to Richard, and have been intending to raise...

    Silverline #4

Yes, new Stanley planes are available in New Zealand too*, but my point was, they're not made in USA as Charles suggested, nor in the UK. They may even be made in the same factory as the Silverline. * they're amazingly expensive here, at the best part of $200  Cheers, Vann.

    Silverline #4

I'm fairly sure that's not right Charles. Blood & Gore suggests Stanley stopped making the No.3, No.4 & No.5 in the USA in 1984 (the last Stanley bench planes made in USA). Rex Mill suggests it was a year earlier. In UK they started in ~1936 and stopped in ~2004. In Australia they started in...

Clico - End of an Era

When I wanted a Clifton cutting iron and 2-piece cap-iron for my Record No.08 I found that UK retailers kept minimal stock got (they could fill their orders direct from Clifton/Clico) and as Clifton No.8 irons had gone out of production several months earlier, I was out of luck. In the end I got...

Clico - End of an Era

Yes. But it's not just another bit going, this was the very last bit. As deema says, the skill of hand making auger bits is now extinct (in the western world at least). I'll take my share of the blame. I own just one Clico auger bit (bought as that was one size I couldn't find in good condition...

Clico - End of an Era

Not wanting to hijack the thread on Clifton block planes (especially as they're no longer part of Clico), I want to lament the end of Clico. I had not realised they went into voluntary liquidation until Sheffield Tony posted this on the other thread: which has deeper implications. It seems to...

    British Low Angle Block Plane

Were they standard angle or low angle, Peter? 1 5/8" wide iron? Cheers, Vann.
