    Dating a Stanley #4 1/2 plane?

Stanley UK were using Qualcast for their plane castings a good many years before Record switched to Qualcast (late 1950s). It can't have been many years after the war. Cheers, Vann.

How long do plane blades last?

Even that is very variable. I suspect that your old fashioned worker, at a bench 40 hours a week, would probably only use his No.4 and/or No.5 for 15-30 minutes a day (say 30 seconds - 30 to 60 times in a shift). Maybe a proper galoot, shunning his P/T while preparing his boards by hand, would...

    Dating a Stanley #4 1/2 plane?

Stanley bought out JA Chapman in December 1936, and set up Stanley UK. I believe they began producing UK Stanleys before WW2, but suspect some models had a lot of USA made parts, at the time. The first UK Stanleys have the same features as the USA Stanley of the time - type 16. Early UK...

There's nothing like a nice low knob.....

I prefer the analogue analogy. Half a degree? In my humble opinion that's a bogus measurement. One and a half turns is 540 degrees. 25 minutes is 150 degrees rotation of the wheel. Does 30 minutes turn of the wheel = half a degree of tilt of the yoke? Possibly, but I doubt it's anywhere near...

There's nothing like a nice low knob.....

I wouldn't file the mouth. You have beautiful plane there, built to tight tolerances. To go and hack the mouth open would be a shame (better to start with a wide-mouth plane in the first place). Acouple or three years back, I bought a Clifton 2 5/8" iron for my Record 08. I was loath to file...

There's nothing like a nice low knob.....

I believe JJ1 is correct, Hock and Veritas replacement irons are not much thicker than the standard Stanley irons. Stanley irons tend to be in the 1.9 to 2.2mm thickness range, with older irons being at the thinner end of the range (because they've been lapped more often :?: ). Hock irons are...

    What a lot of posts

What? Where? Who? Me... Administrators - a nice Clifton No.3110 shoulder plane will be sufficient thanks - with "1,000,000th post" inscribed on the side  Cheers, Vann.

    Identifing Bandsaw Guides

Thanks gentlemen. You are correct - they are almost certainly, Chaco guides. I emailed Chaco, and they replied... So thanks very much for your help. If the prices aren't too high (Swiss , yeah right  ) I may be able to afford some OEM parts. Cheers, Vann.

Oil and wax for hand tools?

IIRC there's a problem applying BLO to rosewood - in that it turns the rosewood so dark you loose the grain. I apply a number of coats of BLO to most handles (except rosewood), then when the handle won't absorb much more BLO I give it a couple of days before applying "Black Bison" wax. For...

    Identifing Bandsaw Guides

Hi all. I recently bought an old cast iron 30" bandsaw (made by Preston in Canada, in 1928). It has relatively modern guides that are most likely of European origin (due to the metric threads). I'm hoping someone might recognise them. The agents, Louis Eichmann Ltd, operated from this...

    Not a boring machine!

13th June. I'm sorry I took so long to get around to posting it   Or, according to Google, 11,784 miles. Plus the 11,780 odd to get to NZ in the first place - that makes it one well-travelled auger bit :D It's good to see it in action. Enjoy! Cheers, Vann.

Stanley number 8; how long the Sole ?

12½ inches long    Seriously though Stanley make Bailey planes - they're the same brand. However, as the term Bailey is often used to describe the frog arrangement in planes by Stanley's competitors. But in this case it's a Stanley Bailey plane. Cheers, Vann.

Gap filling adhesive for Tote Repair?

I agree, a number 3-4 tote will not fit a No.4.5, 5, 5.5, 6, 7 or 8 - well it will, but it will never look right. Jimi swears by Titebond (Original IIRC). I've not bought any to try yet  Cheers, Vann.

    Wadkin PK gearbox lubricant?

I enquired of a friend, and he put me onto a local Mobil service station that still supplies products other that petrol and pies  Here's what I got back from them: Hi, thank you for your query on grease and oil for your Machine. The Grease No. 2 equivalent is Mobil Grease XHP 222 –...

Clico - End of an Era

WHOA :!: You guys are turning my lament at the loss of old skills into a sharpening thread  ? :D (hammer) Something that's come out of this discussion though, is that the cryogenic treated irons aren't hand-forged anymore (I hadn't realised that). That's another old skill...

Clico - End of an Era

I can't find it in myself to be critical of Alan Reid - if it wasn't for his interest in making handplanes, Clifton might never have existed. It's just a pity he didn't have a similar interest in selling them... Cheers, Vann.

    Calling all wadkin PK owners

Bump (again). Come on guys - there must be more than a few Wadkin PK owners here. Is there nobody who loves their PK enough to share...? Cheers, Vann.
