    help with identifying a vice

Agreed - except for the 52 1/2 D - the "D" stands for Dog, which this one clearly doesn't have. Cheers, Vann.

Stanley hand drill restoration and improvement

I keep a countersink bit permanently in a nice little no-name, double pinion, eggbeater, and a 1/8" (3mm) bit permanently chucked in another no-name (possibly Kean) double pinion eggbeater. This leaves me with the Chapman No.105 and a Record No.123 for other sizes I need on a job. I have a...

Stanley hand drill restoration and improvement

Unlike handplanes, there seems to be little in common between Stanley's USA and UK made hand drills (your page being from a Stanley USA catalogue). Cheers, Vann.

Stanley hand drill restoration and improvement

Not on the Stanley No.803/805. But it is on the Record No.125 (N20127) and I think also on their No.124 (N20126) - see AndyT's illustration above. Cheers, Vann.

Stanley hand drill restoration and improvement

I think it's the best of the common British drills. A better British drill would be the Record No.124. As for US drills - well over here we pretty much stopped importing them once you guys started making tools in large numbers, and we switched to importing from Empire/Commonwealth countries - so...

Stanley hand drill restoration and improvement

Just to add my tuppence worth: The No.803 dates back to JA Chapman times when it was their No.105. I'd assumed the one shown below was pre-1937, but if it shows in your 1940 catalogue then that's not necessarily the case. It came with a ¼” chuck. The first change (as far as I can tell) is the...

    Preservation or Utilisation? Antique Tools

Hang on, that's more than your share. Tuppence is slightly less than £0.01  Cheers, Vann.

    Preservation or Utilisation? Antique Tools

I think that logic could be applied to many of the tools we have, even if the age isn't in the same league. Here I disagree. In my misspent youth I put in a lot of hours at a steam railway. There were a few discussions about steam locomotives behind glass, and whether they should be out running...

Vintage British planes worth buying [metal]

I agree. They seem to be similar in quality to a Stanley era Acorn, or Stanley Handiman. They should be in a list of "Vintage British planes NOT worth buying (unless really really cheap)" Cheers, Vann.

    Dating a Stanley #4 1/2 plane?

My prediction for 2016: The addiction won't subside and you'll have 20+ planes by this time next year (hammer) Have a great New Year everybody. Cheers, Vann :ho2 :deer :deer :deer .

    cap iron for a stanley bailey no.8 - 2 5/8" width

Lie-Nielsen no longer make Stanley/Record replacement blades, and regarding their replacement cap irons they say "...It is possible that they may fit some original Stanley or Record planes..."; Ray Ilse don't appear to make cap-irons; it seems you can't buy a IBC Pinnalce cap-iron without a...

Ovolo cutters for a Record 405

I wonder if the Clifton multi-plane is still available - or more importantly (as we're probably not in the market for a £1500 plane), if the individual cutters are still available? Cheers, Vann.

Best Breast Drill? Millers Falls 87

+1. I have a Yankee No.1555; a No.1545 & No.545 (which I hope to rebuild into one working drill); and I bought my daughter a No.1530. The 1555 purrs beautifully. Neither of the 1545/545 currently work (2nd bought for spare parts). The 1530 did work fine, but now has an issue with jamming that I...

Best Breast Drill? Millers Falls 87

I think the Yankee 1555/555 challenges it. Which is the better is probably subjective. Cheers, Vann.

Best Stanley Vintage Brace - Help Please

North Bros Yankee No.2100 (also made by Stanley after they bought out North Bros.) These are probably the best made braces ever. But of course they're very collectible and you'll pay through the nose for them. As they'll most likely have to come from the USA you'll pay through the nose again...

In praise of the 2-part cap.

No need for a feeler gauge - you can see the huge gap... about-thick-cap-irons-t80018.html?hilit=Stanley_cap&start=30 (see also the last few posts previous page of that thread) Cheers, Vann.

    Help I broke my plane!

9/32" 24tpi LH thread You'll need to go to a specialist for a suitable tap. I think Phil's suggestion isn't all bad. If you drill it out in small steps, you should be able to get the angle right, so that the threaded rod gets glued in at the correct angle. However, first I'd try easing the...

In praise of the 2-part cap.

Hi BB. I'm not sure I understand what you're saying here - but I thought the idea of the SS was to press down toward the centre of the cutting iron, as well as the leading edge, and the top (three places) - in order to avoid the bowing effect a single piece cap-iron can have on the cutting iron...
