Stanley 9 1/2, made in England, dating?

I can't argue, I'm going by two smallish photos, and gut feel, but... ...except that a 1940s one would have the tops of the wings milled. This one has the top edges painted. So definitely not earlier than 1950s. Cheers, Vann.

Stanley 9 1/2, made in England, dating?

I can't help with dating block planes. All I can say is it looks relatively modern - 1970s, 80s, 90s (then again, I don't know how a 1940s one would differ #-o ). Cheers, Vann.

    Rusty Acorn

Another way of checking to see if it's laminated is to leave it in citric acid overnight. The hardened steel will go considerably darker than the soft steel. If it's evenly dark both sides then it's not laminated. If it is laminated then you can't flip it over. Cheers, Vann.

    Dominion Minor combination woodworking machine

I don't know about selling, but how about posting a few pictures on here (including WIP) for those who like to admire old iron (and who knows, someone might make you an offer). Come to think of it, there's a for sale section on this forum. And there's always the evilbay  Cheers, Vann.

    Jamming Yankee No.1555

I have a Yankee No.1555 too. Mine works fine - but I don't have any feeler gauges to check clearances (since my last ones went rusty though lack of use). I also have a 545 and 1545 Yankee - both munted - from which I hope to make a single working 1545 (one's been in pieces for over a year...

Has anyone used a bench plane with only one frog screw?

Better still, I've used planes without any. My Cliftons don't have any frog screws - just frog pins (and pin screws to tighten them). Does that count? Cheers, Vann.

Tool post dimensions. Your input and information is needed!

Hi. I've just bought a Wadkin RT lathe (smallest of the pre-Bursgreen range) - RTA 380 of 1951. The tool post is 1 1/8" diameter and 1 7/8" long. I believe it's the same as used on Wadkin's RS lathes - and the toolpost holder pattern numbers have an "RS" prefix. However, the RT is a 6" lathe...

    Vintage bandsaw

Good decision (we hope). Confirming that the "B" on the motor stands for Brooks. Looking forward to a WIP. Cheers, Vann.

    Jointer plane, new Chinese ones...

That's a bit of a broad statement isn't it Corneel? There are a variety of Bailey designs... ..does that apply to all of them? Cheers, Vann.

    No. 3 Plane

I wanted to try a Clifton, but already had a No.4 (Record 04ss) so opted for a Clifton No.3. I found I really like it. Or in the case of the Clifton - a bit heavier and nimbler  Cheers, Vann.

Re-commissioning old planes, what's worth your time?

As bugbear says, the dating guides only apply to American Stanleys (possibly including Canadian Stanleys). UK Stanleys started about WW2 with clones of the USA type 16 (they bought out JA Chapman in Dec. 1936, and started producing planes shortly thereafter). I agree with MIGNAL - probably...

Putting a Date to Record Planes

Unfortunately David Lynch died in 2014, taking a lot more valuable information with him. I had some correspondence with him several years ago on a similar subject (some changes in Record No.050 plough planes). I'll have to look see if the emails on this computer go back that far. Edit: I see...

    This just found me.

That would be hard to work out - without inside knowledge from a former employee or company records. The wheel certainly is the same as the Stanley wheel. But there would probably have been a number of patterns in use, with new patterns being made as older ones wore out. So whether they altered...

    UK Stanley Planes...

Thanks for that - it adds to the pool of knowledge. Did you work for Stanley UK, or buy one of the 5 1/4's? Cheers, Vann.

    UK Stanley Planes...

I believe Memzey is right. No.1 & No.2 weren't made in UK, and I've asked the question on here before and no one could produce evidence of a UK made Stanley No.8 (although Stanley UK did make replacement irons for the No.8 - as did Clifton). I'm less sure on the No.5¼. Stanley UK also made a...

    Brace, non ratchet

I picked up a 10" Val d'or brace - but it has a ratchet. If you want to nip across to New Zealand you can have it  . Cheers, Vann.

    A Record No.08 with 'Stay-Set' cap-iron :!: Very nice :occasion5: Cheers, Vann.

Clifton bench planes - the origins.

Funny how each person is different. I only have two Clifton planes (plenty of Clifton irons and cap-irons, but only two planes): a No.3 and a No.4½, and I prefer the No.3 mostly because of the blade width (the same width as Stanley's No.5¼). My hand is a little under 4" across the palm. Cheers...
