Finally accepting it's time to hang up my tools.

From the opposite end of the world, sorry to hear of your (and your wife's) failing health. I'm 60, so I figure I don't have a lot of years left either. I've been gathering tools to use in my retirement - and sometimes wonder if I'll get to enjoy using them. Keep in touch via the forum...

    stanley no73-101N Brazilian Rosewood?

Is it Stanley USA or UK? (I think the No.73 is British - maybe?). If it's American, chances are high it's rosewood (in my experience). Much less so if it's British - but still possible. WW2 halted the use of rosewood on most British tools, and manufacturers like Record and Stanley didn't go back...

    Really useful brace to identify

Not really, except that the 917 and 2100 were both made by Stanley USA at some period. The ratchet mechanisms are not the same, but I have to say, the 917 ratchet is nearly as smooth as the 2100. Cheers, Vann.

Clico 922 block plane - one for the collectors?

Surely not the same Clico, Andy? If it is, it's probably about as related to the recently demised Clico as the Rubbermaid/Irwin/Record is to the Record of old. That block plane looks like pressed sheet to me  . Cheers, Vann.

    Really useful brace to identify

Hi Andy. I wasn't thinking of bidding (not even at $1), as I have more 10" braces than you can shake a stick at  I think (from memory) those chucks are called "Universal" chucks (at least by Stanley). Here are my two... Top one is an 8" Stanley No.917; lower one is a 10" Pexto...

    Really useful brace to identify

Here's another with that chuck, just been listed over here. http://www.trademe.co.nz/antiques-colle ... 459468.htm It a John S Fray I think. Cheers, Vann.

    Really useful brace to identify

I was going to ask if Borringgeoff was allowed to play. But Rhyolith posted an answer before Geoff would have even got out of bed. I've not seen that ratchet before. I have at least one brace with that chuck, but don't think it's a PS&W (not that I'm a brace expert). Cheers, Vann.

    Wadkin RT Lathe restoration

Possibly. I've only used it a couple of times so far (currently making a shorter tool rest so I can make up some tool handles (practice, as I have zilch experience with wood turning). I took the bearing cover off the headstock RH bearing yesterday, and it was dry. I pumped some grease in...

    Wadkin RT Lathe restoration

Hi Wallace. Did you, by any chance, record what the bearings are (model no.)? Cheers, Vann.

    Wadkin lathe restoration

But not quite so handy if you were to do some outboard turning* (hammer). Your pictures of the tool rests are very timely - I acquired a piece of steel for a shorter rest for my Wadkin RT this week. It might be a weekend project (if other things don't take priority  ). Thank-you. *...

    Wacky new form of measurement.

DiscoStu, you're obviously a young person*. Us old gits have no trouble with that. *another clue he's young is he's used his iPhone and Tapatalk (I don't even know what the latter is :!: ) Cheers, Vann :D

    Loose Lateral Adjuster

The pin/rivet goes right through, so you should be able to knock one head off flush and drive it through. I've not repaired one myself (got at least one in the "to do" box) so I don't know if it's easier from one side or the other. Finding a replacement would be difficult. Best source would be...

    Loose Lateral Adjuster

That's a damned good website. I thought it went down last year - David Lynch died in 2014. I'm pleased to see it can still be accessed. Stanley's earlier design had a rotating disc, so as to keep wear even, I guess. They changed to the fixed disc in the early 1930s (before production started in...

    Cheap Jack plane offer.

When I started my apprenticeship in 1973 I bought a brand new Stanley No.4. Stanley's quality control was already on it's way out the window, and I must have bought a $hi**er - it wouldn't work out of the box, and no-one showed me how to fettle it (I didn't even realise it might need work)...

Common issue with Hand Powered Drills

So it's not just me then. I gave away four No.805s (single pinion model) to a local kindergarten last month (after swapping a few 5/16" chucks for 1/4" chucks off my 803s). I still have too many 803s, and various other eggbeaters  I haven't found any eggbeaters with ball bearings either...

    Cheap Jack plane offer.

Made to "...manufactured to uncompromisingly high standards...". So high in fact, that the workers on the shop floor can't reach them to see what is specified. Modern Record Irwin planes don't have a good reputation. Cheers, Vann.

    Replacement Stanley #4 yoke?

The pins go in (and out) better from one side than the other. I can't recall which side for sure, but I think you may have knocked it out the wrong way #-o (just for future reference). Cheers, Vann.

    Replacement Stanley #4 yoke?

Generally, a Record yoke will fit a Stanley plane. In 1930 Record copied Stanley planes in almost every detail, right down to the (by then) non-standard threads. The geometry will be identical. Cheers, Vann.
