Wadkin RS8 2 speed switch - To strip or leave alone?

I was thinking that too. I was thinking that too  . I didn't do anything to that switch on my RT - but then again I wasn't doing much at all, just getting it up and running. I can't recall whether it's possible to get to the contacts without dismantling it, but I wouldn't dismantle that...

I was intrigued by the name. Probably not the same Trojan. Cheers, Vann.

    Bevel-up, angle low: woodworker confused..

Veritas make very nice planes, but they sure have a problem with terminology. All their Low-Angle planes are Bevel-Up - with the low angle being 12°. They also make at least one Bevel-Up block plane that has a 20° bed and therefore doesn't fit in the "low angle" catagory. However: Some of...

Stanley Bailey No 4: To far gone?

Nice. =D> You've done well, that looks like it's be a good user plane. Anything more is just bling* - to satisfy yourself, not the wood you're intending to plane. * nothing wrong with bling, but it's not necessary to make the plane cut well. Cheers, Vann.

    Record 020 Compass/Circular Plane - Locking Screw

Mine is an 020, not the later 020C. The locking screw on mine is 3/16" dia. 24tpi, which appears to be a standard BSW thread. The length of the shank isn't a rounded imperial length, but about 1/32" under 5/8" long (= 15mm) - threaded almost to the head. The head is 1/4" long and 3/8" dia. and...

Holdfasts - are the Rutland ones any good?

I'm with the others - I wouldn't buy them, except from a proven manufacturer. I don't know if they're steel or iron, cast or drop-forged - but if this design isn't made correctly, they'll likely fracture in use. Cheers, Vann.

    Giant Screwdriver Restoration

I was thinking: a blunt sword  When I started my apprenticeship (back in 1973), if you knew someone in the Blacksmiths Shop they'd make you a turnscrew from old spring material. So there are probably lots around with no makers name. Cheers, Vann.

Do I need a No. 5 Jack Plane?

When it comes to 5 vrs 5½, personally I get on better with the narrower No.5. However I would have thought your wooden jack would fulfill the role of the No.5/5½ adequately (and some say better than a metal plane - though I haven't mastered setting woodie irons yet). Of course, if you get a...

    Vintage MEM Electrics

Back in February, I was trying to find the age of some electrical components - including the ones that came on my 1928 Preston Woodworking Machinery (Canada) bandsaw. You guys were very helpful, and the consensus was the the pressed steel boxes dated from late 1960s or early 1970s. Just for the...

a stanley no 4 smoothing plane as my first plane

I'm with Pete. These two look good (assuming no hidden defects), but if you're going near Nottingham, Pete's offer will be ever better, and you get a chance to try them as well. Cheers, Vann.

**** rebate block plan with adjustable mouth

The problem is, Quangsheng build quality differs according to the requirements of the customer. So a "****" Quangsheng is not necessarily the same quality as a "Woodriver" Quangsheng, or a WH "Quangsheng", or a "Rider" Quangsheng. If you want to know the quality of the "****" Quangsheng, you'll...

Stanley Bailey No 4: To far gone?

There is a school of thought that says take a minimalist approach (i.e. don't stamp out all traces of the previous users). I was looking at the pictures of your plane after de-rusting, and thought it looked good as it is. On the other hand - a Stanley No.4 has no rarity value whatsoever - so...
