    another wadkin 10 ags

IMHO keep it in the one thread - easier to follow your progress that way. I have no experience with the AGS, so can't help, but I'm interested nontheless. Cheers, Vann.

Bench plane review - Record #4 vs Millers Falls

Guilty as charged your honour. But, but, but, but... Record "innovated" the two-piece "Stay-Set" cap-iron. You tested a Millars Falls with optional special lever-cap, and Record without optional special (and fantastic) cap-iron. Unfair !!!! And I wonder if having both on a plane might just be...

    Chisel wrap recommendation

I made a chisel holder out of leather for a 3/16" chisel, years ago. The resulting corrosion munted the chisel. But as a previous posted says, there must be different curing processes that don't cause that problem. I house some of my chisels in a canvas roll (and the rest in drawers). Cheers...

Old Brooks or wadkin motors for Wadkin RM over Under

I love the look of old electric motors. Thanks for the offer, but it's no good to me - I'm in New Zealand. And the OP is in Canada (and now has his Wadkin RM up and running - and looking beautiful). Hopefully it will be of use to someone. Cheers, Vann.

Old Brooks or wadkin motors for Wadkin RM over Under

I didn't have any expectations of horsepower. My Makita thicknesser  has the feed powered off the cutter motor. However, I came across this today... from this thread: wadkin-time-warp-workshop-kent-t58290.html?hilit=Wadkin%20time%20Warp%20workshop&start=45 Which shows that the feed...

    quality planes

DW, I don't believe that Stanley UK made 20 "types" - probably not more than 8 - 10, and they've never been documented. So I assume you're talking about American Stanleys from Canada or the USA - but as you're on a British forum here, you should be more specific. Thanks. Cheers, Vann.

    quality planes

Acorn was JA Chapman's brand of iron planes, before Stanley bought them out in 1936 (to form Stanley UK). Their planes were maroon. They were Bailey copies (wasn't everybody's), but the frogs were an older design (what Patrick lists as the 2nd design in Blood & Gore) with the cantilevered bottom...

Old Brooks or wadkin motors for Wadkin RM over Under

I know this is a very old thread, but in case anyone else is in the same position as Jack was back in 2011, here is what RMA 839 (a 16" model) came equipped with when it left the Wadkin works on 18th October, 1943, bound for New Zealand. The machine was fitted with two English Electric Company...

North Bros "Yankee" Bench Drill - how it works

That's a really great article. Thanks for posting. I've been considering doing something similar on the "Yankee" 1530, 545, 1545, 555 & 1555 eggbeater and breast drills - but my round tuit hasn't come yet. Cheers, Vann.

Clifton Bench Planes one piece cap iron - anyone tried it

Here we go: 2nd to last post on this page shows the patent. about-thick-cap-irons-t80018.html?hilit=patent%20leonard&start=15 Five posts later (on the next page), pictures of a whole series of cap-irons that fail to meet the patent design. Cheers, Vann.

Clifton Bench Planes one piece cap iron - anyone tried it

I think here we have the problem. DW has lots of experience planing, and knows how to correctly set up a handplane to get the best from it and avoid chattering, fluttering, skipping, etc. These days very few schools teach woodwork, and most carpentry apprentices hardly ever use a handplane for...

    Wadkin lathe restoration

So what are you saying about our weather... (hammer) Actually, it's been cr@p this summer. Down in Otago they had 300mm of snow last weekend - in the middle of Summer! Cheers, Vann.

Clifton Bench Planes one piece cap iron - anyone tried it

Not according to Leonard Bailey's patent on his one-piece cap iron. He states that three points of pressure are required (as the two-piece achieves with ease). Unfortunately Stanley haven't made the one-piece to the patent design standard since maybe the 1910s or 20s. See previous threads on...

    Record 9 1/2 - angles and edge retention ?

I couldn't remember off the top of my head if the 9 1/2 was low angle or not. So what he says. Cheers, Vann.

    Record 9 1/2 - angles and edge retention ?

If 30 degrees made no apparent improvement over 25 degrees, I'd begin to wonder about the cheese content of the iron, but I'd probably try 35 degrees next, just to see what happens. Of course, at 35 degrees, you no longer have a low angle. 1990s? Yup, chances are a high cheese content in the...

Clifton Bench Planes one piece cap iron - anyone tried it

Yes I'm sure it works. As I said in a previous post, the heavy Clifton iron isn't going to bend in a hurry anyway. As I see it, the great advantage of the Clifton (or Record) two-piece is they won't attempt to bend a thin cutting iron (as found in Record and Stanley planes), so they're an ideal...

Tabel Saw Blade thickness and riving knife

No. It means a short main fence. I assume your fence (like most) is to the right of the blade. If you're ripping a length of timber and the right-hand piece of the cut bows to the right, it will extend harmlessly beyond the short fence. If you have a long fence it will try to bow to the right...

Scratched chrome on Stanley Lever Cap

    1) Don't stress, it's not important enough; 2) Try buffing if you want - it can't be too different to what the electroplaters do. Cheers, Vann.

Clifton Bench Planes one piece cap iron - anyone tried it

I have to agree with Mike ("woodbrains"). If I wanted a thick single piece cap iron, I had a choice of Hock, Lie-Nielsen (discontinued), Veritas, Quangsheng and PBC. But I didn't, I wanted the 2-piece for my existing Record planes - so I bought Clifton. If I wanted a new cap-iron now, why would...
