    Give us a break!

Yes Western Hills. Half way up Korokoro to be specific. My parents are in Lower Hutt. Not far from the river and certainly not many metres above sea level. I didn't hear that they had to take another unplanned drive up the Wainui hill, so I assume there wasn't a tsunami alert? Korokoro was a...

    Give us a break!

Technically, if you count the harbour, you're only 22km inland... We're less than a km (as the crow flies) from the harbour, but about 60m up. I'm waiting for global warming to reduce the distance to the beach. (hammer) And we had another quake today. 5.2 this time. I didn't feel it. I felt...

Speed up planer cutterblock with smaller pulley?

What's the design of the cutterblock? If it's a clamshell type - gripping the knives by friction only - you might want to be careful speeding it up that much (increasing centrifugal forces). What you get away with at 2800rpm might go flying at 4800rpm. I guess it shouldn't be a problem if all...

Silly Thought - but keeps coming back into my head!!

When I started my apprenticeship (railway workshops, 1973) one of the first training projects was to make a tool chest. Not something fine like the Studley and Schuster, but a rimu box 34" x 16" and 17" high. Handsaws in the lid, three sliding/removable drawers inside, etc. As we would move to...

Help required please - motor and swith - old drill press

Startet were an MEM product (Midland Electric Manufacturing Co. Ltd.). Startet switches do have one advantage over the modern switch you're looking at - they have overload protection (assuming of course that the Startet switch is correctly rated for your motor - they often aren't). Heaters...

    Planes - dummies guide

I don't know if it will enlighten, entertain, or confuse - but google "Patrick's Blood and Gore" for a run down of Stanley plane varieties. Cheers, Vann.

    Plane advice

That's a #78 (not #75) They came blunt and you sharpened them to suit your requirements (I haven't sharpened any of mine yet  ) Yup, that's a #75. It looks to be missing its nose. They're said to be close to useless (I have never tried one). For cutters you can try eBay. Ray Ilse makes...

Why 12 degrees for bevel up planes?

And no one has mentioned that probably the majority of Stanley's LA BU planes were 20 deg: No.110; No.120; No.130; No.220 etc. Cheers, Vann.

    Plane Dilemma

That's the one. I hope you're not calling me a troll? Cheers, Vann.

How to store your Russell Jennings bits

I could well be wrong, but I read, when Clico were still operating, they were the last in the western world still making them the traditional way. Cheers, Vann.

Why 12 degrees for bevel up planes?

I don't know why 12 degrees. Maybe any lower creates problem with clearance? I've never worried about it. I can't think why I'd want to "stay aligned" with my bevel down planes - except maybe initially to make a comparison. Just sharpen your irons at 5 degree multiples and work at 47/52/57...

    Plane Dilemma

There was a highly respected carpenter who used a No.7 for everything. I use my No.4 for most smoothing, but have a No.3 for fine smoothing. I love the feel of the No.3. Cheers, Vann.

How to store your Russell Jennings bits

Nah, it's going to break off along the fold line just as you walk over a concrete floor - and all the bits will fall on the floor and damage all the sharpened spurs... I'll get my coat :D Cheers, Vann.

    Wadkin RS banjo dimensions

I had a spare for a 6" RS, which I sent to Auscab in Melbourne. It was too short for his RS (can't remember if his is an 8" or a 10" RS). Cheers, Vann.

    Trump and bleach

I don't think Trump did win the election - I think Clinton lost it, by being so boring; more of the same; more of people being screwed over by big business. People just wanted something different. And he does have a certain 'X' factor. So it doesn't matter if he is "utterly and completely...

Ahh well, there'll be a few less this election. And related... Cheers, Vann.

    Record 044 Plough Plane Question

"Made in USA". Thanks. I suspect the No.5 1/4 weren't cast in the UK either, but I'll keep gathering information. Cheers, Vann.
