Possibly the best table saw in the world!

He's right. The best table saw in the world is, of course, the Wadkin PK ;). Cheers, Vann.

    Replacement iron for Stanley No.8

I bought a Clifton No.8 iron for a Record 08ss. I had it surface ground to 2.6mm thick to avoid filing the mouth and other issues associated with thick irons. Not so. Stanley No.8, Stanley No.608, Record No.08 and Record No.08ss (although the last two are effectively the same plane). Cheers, Vann.

    Wadkin EQ brake parts

Unfortunately you can't decipher the test number, you need the list. Purely by coincidence (planets aligning sort of stuff) if your test number begins with 57 it was made in 1957 - but then it goes out of alignment again. Anyways, I use the list on wallace's Wadkin Restorations website. Allowing...

    Wadkin EQ brake parts

Thanks for the tag photo. Test 72133 was carried out in 1965. I'll add your machine to the list of 1100 Wadkins over on the Canadian forum. Cheers, Vann.

    Wadkin EQ brake parts

You could try Daltons or AMS for genuine new parts - but if they have them you may need to use your entire retirement savings to pay for them. Also watch ebayUK for parts or a parts machine. But hopefully someone here will have something. Could you kindly post a picture of the EQ "Wadkin Ltd"...

    Wadkin Ags Spindle

I use a DTE Medium-Heavy (which I have in my oil can for lubricating my working Wadkins), but anything similar will hold the rust at bay for a while. Cheers, Vann.

    Sold wadkin 8" planer

Hi adidat. Nice machine the Wadkin RB. I'm over half way through refurbishing one of those - but less complete than yours (mine's missing guard, fence, motor, electrics). By the way they're 9", not 8". Could you kindly put up a photo of the Wadkin tag on the front of the machine. Cheers, Vann.

    Stanley brass plane

As all the other parts look genuine, I'd guess that someone dropped their plane and broke it. Having access to a foundry they had a new body cast in brass/bronze/gunmetal. Over here (NZ) I've seen brass 'Stanley' planes where all the parts were copies. These usually date to WW2 where war...

    Wadkin AGS10 rebuild

Most of the Wadkin-Bursgreen records went west, when Wadkin closed the Fence Houses plant instead of closing Green Lane (unhappy laid off workers). So, short of a receipt or similar, you'll never know for sure. But it's believed that those first two digits give the year the machine was built...

    Record 405 cutters

But it gets worse. Some have their notch on one side, some on the other. Some are longer, and some are shorter. Unless you bypass the adjuster, your Record 405 will only take Record and Clifton 405 cutters, or Stanley 45 cutters. Flynn were selling off remaining Clifton 405 cutter stock a year...

    Clifton 4 1/2 Smoother

I don't much like the Veritas bevel down range. I have a green Clifton No.4.5, but I find the size and weight doesn't suit me. My Cliffie No.3, on the other hand, is one of my favorites. I also have the Lie-Nielsen No.4 1/2, with high angle frog, that gets even less use than the Clifton No.4...

    1940s wadkin planer thicknesser

Good save. Finding a fence or blade cover will be hard. Best bet are overpriced parts from a dealer or ePay. Expect to pay considerably more for the parts than you paid for the machine. I picked up a Wadkin surface planer missing the same parts. I managed to get a fence from a Sagar surface...

    Captain Tom has died

It's been on the radio here too (New Zealand). Rest in peace Tom. Tears, Vann.

    Wadkin AGS 10 restoration

I regret that I know little about the AGS. My interest is concentrated on pre-Bursgreen machines and I have neglected Wadkin-Bursgreen machines (I'll go stand in the corner :() We used to think the first 2 digits of the Wadkin (pre-Bursgreen) Test Number was the year of manufacture - but this...

    Vaccination

Yup, thousands of miles - we don't have any vaccines here in New Zealand yet. IIRC the first shipments are due in March. Even then I'll feel guilty. There are so many countries that need it more than we do. Yes, it'll be interesting to see how long protection lasts, and whether the virus...

    Wadkin AGS 10 restoration

Hi Michal. If it is cast iron the gear teeth can still be built up by brasing (adding brass with an oxy-acetylene torch). If the whole casting is heated first then it is unlikely to crack. Brasing is the traditional way to repair broken cast iron (before nickle welding rods were invented)...

    cap iron too short?

Jacob is right (and DW is wrong). The relationship between the irons and the mouth is set by the cap-iron. A new cutting iron does not effect that relationship. Have you been using the plane (with that cap iron) up to now? If so you should be able to set it up the same with the new cutting...

How would you rate the UK's handling of this pandemic?

Going by the number of people Rorschach has riled up, I'd say most have have got that impression from him. I get the impression your thoughts are similar, maybe that's why you haven't noticed? Cheers, Vann.

That's been my impression of Rorschach's posts too. Cheers, Vann.
