Purely by coincidence (planets aligning sort of stuff) if your test number begins with 57 it was made in 1957 - but then it goes out of alignment again. You could try Daltons or AMS for genuine new parts - but if they have them you may need to use your entire retirement savings to pay for them. Also watch ebayUK for parts or a parts machine. But hopefully someone here will have something. Could you kindly post a picture of the EQ "Wadkin Ltd"...

I use a DTE Medium-Heavy (which I have in my oil can for lubricating my working Wadkins), but anything similar will hold the rust at bay for a while. Cheers, Vann.

As all the other parts look genuine, I'd guess that someone dropped their plane and broke it. Having access to a foundry they had a new body cast in brass/bronze/gunmetal. Over here (NZ) I've seen brass 'Stanley' planes where all the parts were copies. These usually date to WW2 where war...

Most of the Wadkin-Bursgreen records went west, when Wadkin closed the Fence Houses plant instead of closing Green Lane (unhappy laid off workers). So, short of a receipt or similar, you'll never know for sure. But it's believed that those first two digits give the year the machine was built...

But it gets worse. Some have their notch on one side, some on the other. Some are longer, and some are shorter. Unless you bypass the adjuster, your Record 405 will only take Record and Clifton 405 cutters, or Stanley 45 cutters. Flynn were selling off remaining Clifton 405 cutter stock a year...

I don't much like the Veritas bevel down range. I have a green Clifton No.4.5, but I find the size and weight doesn't suit me. My Cliffie No.3, on the other hand, is one of my favorites. I also have the Lie-Nielsen No.4 1/2, with high angle frog, that gets even less use than the Clifton No.4...

Good save. Finding a fence or blade cover will be hard. Best bet are overpriced parts from a dealer or ePay. Expect to pay considerably more for the parts than you paid for the machine. I picked up a Wadkin surface planer missing the same parts. I managed to get a fence from a Sagar surface...

Hi Michal. If it is cast iron the gear teeth can still be built up by brasing (adding brass with an oxy-acetylene torch). If the whole casting is heated first then it is unlikely to crack. Brasing is the traditional way to repair broken cast iron (before nickle welding rods were invented)...

Jacob is right (and DW is wrong). The relationship between the irons and the mouth is set by the cap-iron. A new cutting iron does not effect that relationship. Have you been using the plane (with that cap iron) up to now? If so you should be able to set it up the same with the new cutting...
