    Woden W78 mystery part

Firstly - Stanley never made a twin rod version of the No.78. Secondly - the fence rods off a Woden W78 or off a Record No.778 will not fit. In addition the hole spacing for the Record No.778 is different. I believe the Indian copies are based on the Record No.778 - in which case the rods and...

Wadkin BGS10…The rarest table saw Wadkin made. Full Restoration

While I agree those square tin box Memota DOL starters are quite boring, I have a soft spot for the earlier ones such as these Memota Series 4 boxes (these are two I was doing up last year). The RH box is cast-iron, while the LH box is die-cast. Or better still the even older Series 1, 2 & 3...

Stanley (?) plane, type 4 - restoration advice

As Bod says, that's not made by any of the regular British makers. And it's not a Stanley USA/Canada/Australia product either. As Europeans tended to stick with wooden planes, I'd suggest it's most likely American. Try an American forum. Cheers, Vann.

    Energy Saving

Obviously every tap is different but, I experimented with one hot water tap in our house that took ages to warm. I measured 7 pints before the flowing water changed from cold to warm. That means every time the hot tap was turned off 7 pints of hot water was left in the pipes to cool off. Wasted...

    Energy Saving

Same here. I tell her that we've paid for all that heat - leave it to warm the house. But no, she's got to drain all the water down the plug hole and then turn on a heater. I don't know if she doesn't understand (or if she thinks I'm an old tight-a$$). Cheers, Vann.

Convert cheap battery drills to mains elec (UK)

I had contemplated using a car battery to power my 12v drill - but never got around to it. Could even go so far as to run a 12v circuit near the bench with several sockets... My tuppence worth. Cheers, Vann.

Arundel J4 Lathe & Gryphon Motor - Opinions?

Gryphon motors are/were part of Brooks Motors, a reputable brand. Should be good. Cheers, Vann.

No.5 jack plane blade advancement issue

It's a trap for young players - the cutting iron has nothing to do with the limits of blade projection. The blade has a looong slot, it's almost infinitely adjustable. Issues like this are nearly always caused by the cap iron. As others have said, it's the distance from the yoke slot to the...

    Rusty old planes.

I feel sure they were never made at the English Stanley works*, and certainly not at the Australian Stanley works. That leaves the USA and Canada. I have no idea if the Canadian works ever made them but I suspect it was a significantly smaller operation than the USA works, and therefore probably...

A-ha. Stanley S4 and S5 maybe. S4 photos (stolen from Patrick's Blood & Gore) Cheers, Vann.

Pickles Ransome Lathe, Wadkin forerunner ??

A bit of research doesn't help much! It appears John Pickle & Son took over A Ransome & Co. in 1930/31 to form Pickles Ransome - so the lathe is post-1930. I don't know when the first Wadkin RS was made, but by 1936 (when Wadkin & Co. became Wadkin Ltd.) they had already made ~140 RS lathes...

Pickles Ransome Lathe, Wadkin forerunner ??

Interesting! It certainly has a lot of similarities to Wadkin's RS, and some differences. Companies frequently copied other manufacturers. Who's to say who copied who. I believe the Wadkin-Bursgreen BRA radial arm saw is a copy of a De Walt ras. Cheers, Vann.

    Riving Knife (Aluminium or Steel)

Err... No. The riving knife has to be sized for the blade. If the saw was originally supplied with, say, a 2.4mm kerf blade, and you're now running a 1.8mm kerf blade, then the saw manufacturer's riving knife is going to be the wrong thickness. Cheers, Vann.

    Riving Knife (Aluminium or Steel)

I wouldn't use aluminium. I've just thrown out a mild steel one - bent and too thin - and I'm making a new one from an old blade. I cut the basic shape with a slitting disc in a grinder and am grinding and filing to final shape. I'm pleasantly surprised that I can drill and file the plate...

    Wadkin RS Lathes

Hi. Not an RS, but an RM - RM 446, test 9008. Thanks in anticipation. Cheers, Vann.

    Wadkin RS Lathes

Hi Clogs. Thanks for the tag photo. Test 21266 was carried out in 1943 I believe. Cheers, Vann.

    Wadkin RS Lathes

That would be appreciated. A tag photo would be great. You're probably right. It is surprising they don't show any photos of foundry or fettling work. Their pattern shop doubled as a display for their machines - and may well have been for the purpose of mocking up machine parts for development...

    Wadkin RS Lathes

RS 1624, test 52304, was tested in 1955. It stayed in Britain. RS 1630, test 52624, also tested in 1955, was exported to the States. It's an 8" RS. RS 2578, test 82433 - which would make it late 1972 - is the latest one I've been able to find (so far). I've always though that the Green Lane...
