    Building Bridges

Everything on it joint wise will be mortice and tenon Paul. It’s big stuff, 4x4 handrail up top, 6x6 O/S posts, 5x5 I/S posts, 3x4 bottom rails, all the lattice work is 3x3 etc etc so I can sink a nice big chisel in everywhere.

    Building Bridges

Yeah this should be a good one, it’s got a little bit of everything going on and it’s nice and straight forward from almost all aspects, it’s size may be problematic but I still think all will be generally well. Thanks for the interest Scotty

    Building Bridges

Been a while since I posted any woodwork on here, but I’ve got a decent job building an oak bridge, the usual start to finish style I’ll post as I go I think, it’s a shade over 5M long, gentle curve in it with lattice in-fills to stop any spills over the side. It’ll be a good job machining wise...

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

It would be a shiny penny I should think. It is so well made you have to see it in person to really appreciate it. When I brought it I couldn’t view it in person, so I asked some salient questions and took a punt on it. When it turned up I was surprised at the immense size of it in such a small...

You can’t beat a bit of British Leyland or similar on your planing machine. This is standard equipment front and back, obviously using whatever they had that was available. Brilliant. Obviously the door is now on, the lettering will be picked out in red sometime soon, but for now I’ll carry on...

    Robinson ET/E Saw

The English machines of this era have an appeal worldwide due to their cost, simplicity and dependability. Unfortunately, as can be seen in your photos, the lack of any guarding and riving knives are a typical sight in some overseas locations (I know it happens anywhere, I have seen firsthand)...

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

The castings are so substantial and the tolerances of the machining are so high that aside from bearings and serious misuse these machines will just go and go and go. I really like old machines, they can produce great work for me, they are dependable and bizarrely cheap to acquire. Thanks for...

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

The pile of scrap is getting thinner and thinner and as more pieces go back on the machine with a new lease of life. I’ve got a long way to go on this machine but i am starting to get to a point where I can see a bit of daylight. I now have the imperial scale and its carrier back on the...

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

I managed to ease the table back into the main event this afternoon, I got it all prepared, cleaned out any fastenings I was reusing (I’m swapping most out for stainless but I have to say the original hardware comes up a treat and it feels very good quality so I’m using it where I can) It was...

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

I flapped some red paint on the thicknessing bed today and left that to do it’s thing, so I turned my attention to the tables rollers and rise and fall actuating mechanism. The rollers themselves are just turned lengths of quality steel, with the ends turned down to accept DN 2062 bearings...

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

Hi Graham, no problem at all I’ll help you in any way I can. I believe you can private message me directly on here. I also have a Robinson dimension saw, in my biased opinion I think they are the finest examples produced, you have great taste 😀 Scotty

Advice on potential purchase of a workshop

That Sagar tenon machine is otherworldly. Phenomenal.

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

Things have moved along in the paint department, I got the top coat on the main casting, it’s looks pretty good, not perfect but i am happy with it, at the end of the day this machine will be getting hammered so it won’t stay pretty for long anyway It’s original colour specification (pretty...

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

The Wadkin is close to getting some paint, I have removed all the threaded bars from the main casting, I had to chase them as there was a small portion of the threads that were marred from rising and falling within the holes as timber was passed through. Nothing major though, all has gone well...

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

Got the table off this afternoon. No hitches really, two 5/8w bolts on both screw threads for the rise and fall need to be removed and then it’s wound off, making sure I was taking some slack. Once it was only on its runners it was a case of bringing it up evenly. I used the 4 link brothers...

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

Here’s what I would call the ‘near side’ assembly for the pressure bars and block plates. This is behind the cast alloy door that sits below the bridge guard assembly it’s a mirror image the other side (minus the rise/fall assembly) The chain you see in shot is part of the rise/fall gear. All...

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

Got the pulley off this afternoon, it put up a real good fight. It’s seen 62 harsh English winters and a little bit of corrosion fused the pulley to the motor shaft. I had to call upon my Burke bar I made a number of years ago (I don’t know what I’d do without it now) and my dad. I had the...

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

I removed the braking electrics today, good news is it can easily fit within the machine electrical compartment so I can rid it of the crappy modern electric box. I’m happy with that as it keeps it all as it was originally. I’ll fill that hole and see what I can do with the lettering. This...

    Wadkin FM24” Planer Restoration

both tables are now removed, along with the castings that enable it to slide up and down on the main event. Leaving the machined top with the dovetail slot exposed. Once I remove the block and the feed rollers I will be able to remove the middle section which will then leave me with main...
