    Walking Stick

Ooops, I've been so busy making more walking sticks that I forgot to provide the update for this stick. The water based poly was perfect, exactly the look I was after. Here's the final product. I've now got another 4 canes on the go, hoping to set up a little Etsy shop to try my hand at...

    Walking Stick

I have a shelf full of water based poly, but for some reason I shy away from it. Not that I'm experienced enough to really have "go to" finishes 🤷🏻‍♂️. Sounds like I'm going to be doing more test pieces tonight. My water based poly is quick drying though, so at least I should be able to make...

    Walking Stick

Any suggestions on how to get the lightest finish possible, whilst it also being glossy/shiny?

    Does this count?

That's really nice, really great positioning and a nice understated design👌🏼

    Walking Stick

Thanks guys, I think that settles it, it's Ash. I'm struggling with the finish now. I've tried Shellac, Hard Wax Oil and Cotton White Rubio Monocoat. Both of the first two darken the wood too much for my liking, resulting in more orange in the colour than I'm happy with. The Cotton White...

    Interesting, that makes perfect sense.

    Walking Stick

I've since cleaned up the walking stick, sanding up through the grits and I'm experimenting with finishes. Whilst the wood is very pale, I like how it looks and want to just accentuate that. Unfortunately experimenting with Shellac and Hard Wax Oil both change the colour far too much for my...

    Walking Stick

After stumbling across Shawn Gillis on instagram and spending hours browsing through his amazing walking sticks, and having hit the ripe old age of 40 recently, I felt inspired to try my hand at making one. As this is my first attempt I wanted to avoid making any design decisions and focus on...

Outdoor coffee table, or bench 🤷🏻‍♂️

I forgot to follow up on the mistake I'd made with gluing up the top. I clamped on 1 side only, opening up the joints between the slats and the rails on the bottom side ever so slightly (~0.5mm). Fortunately being the bottom side, the mistake is largely undiscoverable 😮‍💨. Another bullet...

Outdoor coffee table, or bench 🤷🏻‍♂️

Day one of sanding (yes there was a day two, no I didn't enjoy it) revealed more over eagerness in gluing up the top. I had failed to sand the sides of the slats, so now I had to manage by hand in a location I couldn't squeeze a sanding block into. Lesson learned 🙇🏻‍♂️. Day two of sanding...

Outdoor coffee table, or bench 🤷🏻‍♂️

I won't cover the jig build here, but it was as straight forward as Tamar's build video suggests. Only hiccup was realising that I'd need some imperial threaded rod for the micro jig connectors 🙇🏻‍♂️. Having cut slats and rails to final dimensions I batched out all the mortices. A quick...

Outdoor coffee table, or bench 🤷🏻‍♂️

The coffee table that I refurbished for my mother finally got delivered after 18 months of covid delays, so we are without a place to put our cold beer/prosecco whilst enjoying the garden. I had seen a simple slatted bench design by The Wood Whisperer which I was confident fell comfortably...

    Prototype Shop Stool

My legs are splayed 8 degrees. I'm guessing you're saying that they need to be a less acute angle?

    Prototype Shop Stool

I've not used it for any length of time, so I'll have to see. I mean, it's a solid piece of wood with no moulding, so I'm expecting "not particularly". Your question has made me consider this for the ash version though.. I may experiment some more with shaping this top.

    Prototype Shop Stool

Yeah I totally agree. Thicker legs would definitely be an improvement, it would also allow some shaping which I think they need.

    Prototype Shop Stool

I wondered. Interesting idea to add another one. Turning it the other way around will result in a joint that is not square, meaning I should have had a "not square" joint on the other, and had the legs square to the points of the seat. It's only a prototype, so that's ok, but a note for me...

    Prototype Shop Stool

I have some Ash that I was to use to make a workshop stool, but as I have no experience with chair/stool making I decided to make an (overly elaborate) prototype from baltic birch. I immediately fell into a trap of creativity with complexity that couldn't possibly be part of the future final...
