Latest thing you have printed / machined / cut

Yeah, much easier, although I'm sure using the correct tool results in a better finish. Thanks fezman. I am hoping to be able to combine the two crafts with a new stacked leather walking stick. Now that I know how to dye leather, this one will be colourful, and hopefully impressive. I do...

Latest thing you have printed / machined / cut

I'm not sure if I'm going to get lynched for sharing something that isn't wood, but I'm quite proud of this bit of leatherwork that I completed yesterday. It's an "emergency money" keyring. I bought the template from Etsy for a reasonable price (it was part of a collection of templates) and...

    Oak/Walnut surplus advice

have a look at some of the online stores that sell turning blanks, that will give you an idea of demand and sizes. Short version is, everything is square. It's either (bigger) square and thin (bowl blanks) or (smaller) square and long (spindle blanks). If you've got big boards, you might be...

    AC370WL upgrades

thanks, I've been pointed to options like this on instagram, definitely something worth looking at, but yeah not cheap I think I've experienced both, which is weird enough to make me doubt myself. I've definitely experienced the belt slipping, so yeah, maybe that's what I need to look at...

    AC370WL upgrades

Yes I suppose spindle lock is what I meant. I wondered about the design of the machine meaning a bigger motor might cause issues. I guess that's why I'm asking if anybody has already done this.

    AC370WL upgrades

I have an AC370WL which despite its drawbacks, I love. It's incredible value for money imo. However, it does have said drawbacks... lever based speed change - particularly that it can only be used when the machine is spinning power - it's relatively easy to stall, particularly on a wide piece...

    Mens Sheds

Like you, I've avoided my local Mens Sheds due to experiences in other hobbies. Your post encouraged me to take another look, only to discover that they are only open 10am to midday, on Mondays and Wednesdays, which screams to me exactly what I was concerned about, a bunch of retirees set in...

    Deck replacement

yeah I've been thinking that I need to cost that up as it is an alternative.

    Pressure or Vacuum

I believe those that stabilise wood use both. Vacuum to get all the air out, then pressure to force all the resin in.

    Thanks, I'd appreciate that

    Deck replacement

I hadn't twigged that recycled plastic != composite. Looking again at what I've been looking at.. I had been looking at composite joists that are intended for use on a hard surface as they are cheaper than their (bigger) recycled plastic counterparts. With the company I'm looking at (of course...

    Deck replacement

Yeah definitely would be easier I think. It works out an extra £2-3k by my reckoning though. Useful tip on the footings, I hadn't considered that. I had planned to support the lintels along their length every couple of foot (to avoid any bounce), which I guess would spread the weight some...

    Deck replacement

Our house has a large (41m2) deck that we inherited with the house and now has rotten away and needs replacing. I'm loath to replace the frame with something that can rot away and will need replacing in another 10 years. I've looked at composite, and whilst I think I'm sold on the boards, the...

For Sale Axminster AWVSL 1000 Wood Turning Lathe Price Reduced Again

good price this. I paid £500 for mine in Nov 2021 and it came with 1 x SK100 chuck, no additional jaws and just the standard drive centre and live centre. Very capable machine, if a bit stone age. I'm already craving a better model but the step up is enormous as this one is so capable for...

Food (child) safe coloured pens for turning

Once again, I am relearning the lessons of "asking for advice on the internet". The lesson being, be specific, only I have all the context in my head. Forums are such a wonderful demonstration of how everybody's response to a question is coloured (excuse the pun) by their context, and not...

not a bad shout with those reusable pens

Food (child) safe coloured pens for turning

Thanks for the tip on the ink pens, that's great. I doubt the stain is going to be vibrant enough, and I don't see it marked as food safe which is a hard no for me. I'm going to be selling these and inevitably they will end up being gnawed on by a child at some point.

Food (child) safe coloured pens for turning

I'm making spinning tops and want to colour them, but I'm finding the crayola pens that I'm using don't work well on beech. Are there recognised pens for use with wood turning? Searching for such a thing is horribly polluted with pen turning, so I'm struggling to find out for myself, and so I...

    Cane repair

Oooh, a topic I could actually be considered somewhat of an expert on 🤪 Short version, it's going to be a little tricky no matter what tools are available. My tool of choice for cutting shaft/handle mortices (I pin with brass rod) is a lathe with long hole boring jig. But this is before the...
