Chisel gets dull whilst working up through the grits

I am bad at sharpening, and have undertaken making a dovetailed box, which by the time it is complete will require me to have become "passable" at sharpening. I have 600, 2000, 4000, 8000 grit wet stones. I can freehand a bevel on the 600 grit that feels sharp, but when I step it up to the...

    Gardening tools

I have an hunch that eventually the solution will be something that is mostly carried around. Possibly a combination of tool tote and garden basket, with a shoulder strap for when both hands are needed. That way it can hold things like plant labels, tags, pencil, ties etc. Hmm, that's got me...

    Gardening tools

Just realised that I never got around to uploading the secateur holster and belt. The holster itself was made by wetting 3mm veg tan leather and clamping it over the secateurs. Leather glue, stitching chisels etc made short work of the rest. The result is a really good snug fit that holds the...

I think it's taking a bit of getting used to, the secateurs are obviously a more natural addition to her toolset.

    Gardening tools

I forget at what point I added the brass pins. They're not glued, just peened. Some boiled linseed oil later, and it's a done job. I'm incredibly pleased with how it turned out, in spite of a couple of issues that I have with it. It's a bit big, probably a nice size for my hand, but...

    Gardening tools

I had some good suggestions in a thread I started last month about some garden tool ideas for my wife's birthday. I bought a Hori Hori knife and a pair of Felco secateurs intending to make leather holders for both. The Hori Hori knife arrived with a rather poorly thought out (or at least...

    Gardening multi tools

the leather holster was an extra £20  and deprives me of making a leather holster for her as a supplementary present ;)

    Gardening multi tools

thanks for the replies guys, lots of good food for thought. I'm probably going to go for a Hori knife and/or Felco pruners. I'm a bit concerned about them going missing/getting left out, but we'll see :)

    Gardening multi tools

Bit off topic, but I suspect this forum has more than it's fair share of green fingers, and we all love tools so 🤷🏻‍♂️. My wife has caught the gardening bug pretty hard this year and it's her birthday coming up so I'd like to get her something related. First thing that came to mind was a...

    Apron or Dustcoat?

Waxed cotton apron. Honestly, mostly for the pockets. Having certain tools in a known place really improves flow. It's very useful for glue ups to just be able to wipe my hands on it also. I have a bit of a love hate relationship with it though, I do wonder about having a tool holder on a...

What to do with this MONSTER ?

I love how being forced into to things by the medium can result in something so much better that you'd never have thought of otherwise

What to do with this MONSTER ?

that's beautiful, I love the contrast between the highly polished/finished surface and the hand gouged bowl 👌🏼

    Pocket jig opinions

I have the small Kreg jig with the clamp made for it, they do the job but if doing a big job, the reclamping and drilling gets really old really quickly and seems to take forever. I'd love one of the Kreg foreman's, but can't justify the expense or storage space at the moment :(.

Bedding/Toy box with reclaimed oak breadboard lid

A friend gave me a very nice solid walnut sideboard and some oak cabinet doors, so mostly out of guilt I agreed to use the doors to make a toy box for his (yet to be ) first born. I didn’t have much timber to work with, so the lid is far thinner than I would have liked. But as this is my first...

    Walnut Boards

I assume that these are English Walnut rather than American Black Walnut? Being an avid consumer of woodworking YouTube channels I've only really come across the latter, but that's rather nice, albeit a lot more rustic looking. Lovely job!

    Pantry Built-ins

yeah I’ve had to make some sacrifices to the clean bespoke design that I wanted. The design is pretty locked in now as the sheet goods are ordered. I have room for manoeuvre on the wine rack though.
