    Dust Extraction-external venting

I don't have a Camvac but if the hoses carry all the air from the machine and exhausts it outside you will not be getting any dust inside the shop as long as the intake to the building is far enough away. Any leaks in the vacuum or worn out filters letting dust over the .5 micron size will also...

    paraffin Heater

My shop is above the attached garage, the shop being on the same floor as the laundry, kitchen etc on the second floor. We have a demand hot water heater which also provides heat to the shop via a fan and radiator. Combination boiler in other words. Walls of the shop are 2x6" (house is 10 1/2")...

Which type of bearing to use?

The one we have has over a foot of travel from closed up to stretched so I think it would be plenty for most anything I would play with. Since it would be used with the tool rest I don't know if a little droop would be an issue. Might have to try someday and see. Pete

Which type of bearing to use?

I wonder if a TV mount could be adapted to do the job? This one on sale is $20Cad and as long as it can be loosened enough to move freely and a holder made for the tool shaft I think it would work. I'm not trying to get the OP to change course but it might get the creative juices flowing for...

    Is this African Blackwood?

You might never find out what it is unless there is a place you can send a sample to have it identified. The Americans can get three wood samples a year identified for free. I'll put the link up in case one of the lucky pups stumbles across the thread. Forest Products Laboratory - USDA Forest...

    Foot switch for lathe safety?

Adapt a bite switch...... if you still have teeth that is. Bite switch to a wireless transmitter to activate/deactivate the lathe. No I haven't made one but it make as much sense as what has been tried before. 😉 Pete

My wife has a slightly different version. Be good, and if you can't be good, don't get caught. Pete

    Securing gazebo roof

Our lumberyards sell big screws that will easily hold your rafters down. They replace lag bolts and have a slimmer diameter. Can buy by the box or individually at the lumberyard. I'm sure you have the same or equivalents. Log home builders use them to hold the roof together. Eg...

Dust extraction - flex hose. Smooth vs normal

Also please note that the DC Sideways linked is a North American machine running on 60hertz. If it is available in the UK it will be 50hertz and you will need to factor an instant 20% loss of flow from their performance figures. Pete

Dust extraction - flex hose. Smooth vs normal

The airflow in the 5" pipe will be limited to what the 4" DC inlet can pull. About 400cfm and your flow in the 5" will not be enough to keep the dust in suspension. The 5" pipe will fill with dust. Bad idea. To exaggerate the situation to hopefully make it more clear. If you had the DC outside...

Dust extraction - flex hose. Smooth vs normal

I'm thick today. Does that mean you are going to go ahead with your thinking or give up the idea based on the information I gave you? Pete

Dust extraction - flex hose. Smooth vs normal

When you go from small to large pipe the velocity in the duct will drop and at the other end when it goes back to small it will increase again. The problem is that bigger pipe in between can't hold the dust in suspension and it drops out staying in the duct. In extreme cases the duct will plug...

Dust extraction - flex hose. Smooth vs normal

I don't understand why you want some YouBoob doing a test where they all use the fan type anemometers which with DC size ducting give erroneous readings of 50% or more over actual when you could use the calculator I linked and get the comparisons. 4" ducting of 4 meters (13') with 400CFM gives...

Dust extraction - flex hose. Smooth vs normal

If you want to the calculator will work with any size duct. Try it with 4" and see what the results look like. Just change the flow to 400CFM because that is about the limits of a 4" hose with any HVLP dusty. Pete

Dust extraction - flex hose. Smooth vs normal

Colin the surface drag extends out from the walls more than you would think, affecting the flow overall. One of the reasons dust collector flow claims are up to double of what they actually can move. They take the reading in the centre of the duct where the flow is the highest. Take readings...

Dust extraction - flex hose. Smooth vs normal

Generally the smoother the surface the better. I have never seen a comparison like you want, I suppose because there are so many definitions of what a smooth inner wall would be. I have seen heavy walled water suction hoses that just are pretty much smooth inside but it isn't very flexible. I...

That Ladysmith sure got around. There is one in Western Canada on Vancouver Island. Not the same as the one first pictured but it had a train station. Pete

    Mask Hygiene

On the surface it sounds like you would have been better off with an air supplied respirator. I suspect you were running around your shop rather than being in one spot while spraying making the dragging of an air hose impractical. Pete

    Table saw with scoring blade

Once upon a time you could buy a scoring saw attachment for table saws but they are no longer made. Once in a blue moon one comes up for sale or a saw with one on it. Very rare though. Parts are available from one place but not the whole attachment. I doubt they were ever sold in the UK...
