HITACHI UNIVERSAL WOODWORKING MACHINE Type U-210 £500

I have one of their F1000a planer/jointers (thicknesses/planer to you guys) from the 80's. If I was near that machine I would grab it in a heartbeat if nothing more than to satisfy my curiosity. I don't think they were ever sold on this continent. Pete

Leg vice on an MFT table?

Why does the inside face of your vice have to be flush? The face of my Record 52 1/2 isn't flush to the front edge of top and in over 40 years of use it hasn't been a problem. There isn't anything stopping you from mounting the vertical face proud to the aluminium extrusion. If down the road you...

Anyone got a suggestions for cutting 6-8mm thick perspex

You could buy a plastic cutting blade for your table saw or perhaps a track saw. https://bandsawblades.co.uk/product-category/circular-saw-blades/plastic-circular-saw-blades/ They are a triple chip type so maybe a blade for sheet goods would be similar. A long time ago I cut some up on the...

    We Will Remember Them

I wouldn't exist if it weren't for the sacrifices of soldiers and civilians alike. My mother was Jewish and survived the war because she was hiding in France. Her brother similar and her sister was in England. Everyone she grew up with except for a friend and a cousin were exterminated in a...

    Jealously watching an old video....

I have been aware of him for a while as he used to be featured in Fine Woodworking at times. A buddy of mine took a class with him in the early 80's. If his scroll saw is the model I'm thinking of it has a 30" throat. I have one, bought because it was a good deal but I haven't done a lot with...

    The joy Of Citric Acid

I have a question based loosely on the chemistry classes I took in high school, early 70's. 🤔 That being an acid when mixed with a base neutralizes the solution to water and a salt. So how does mixing citric acid with the soda not reduce the effectiveness as it is neutralized? Pete

    Wanted 'Rotating Wheel' (See attachment)

It sure looks like it is a bearing. There will be numbers and possibly letters on that black seal or etched into the steel that tell you what bearing it is and there will also be the manufactures name too, NSK, Timken etc. Pete

New Workshop - Saved around £12-15k

Looks like it will be a comfortable little shop. I know there is a vast difference in what codes allow but I noticed you have run your ceiling electrical against the roof sheathing. That wouldn't fly here because of the danger of someone down the road driving a fastener though it from above...

Slow Speed Bench Grinders in the UK

Our 60 cycle motors are 3460 and 1730 RPM give or take and your 50 cycle is 2800 and 1400 RPM give or take. That puts your high speed right in the middle of ours. Doesn't really scream get a slower grinder unless you have a 10" or bigger wheel, which would be extreamy rare in a home shop. That's...

    dust collection advice please.

Here is a calculator you can play with. http://www.63alfred.com/freecalc/ductloss.htm It will let you play with the duct size, length, elbows, etc. Then you can repeat the calculations with flex hose to compare the two. You'll have to convert to imperial as it hasn't got provisions for metric...

    Planes again

Interesting approach to making a hand plane. If I understand the pictures correctly you have the ability to vary the blade angle to suit the wood being worked, at least on a flat sole plane. How is it to hold or are you going to refine that later? Pete

    Fine filter size

As a rough guide most 3hp DC's come with two filters (2 plastic bags below) and you can consider that to be a minimum. You should look into suppliers that provide filters to industry. Better made, built to a specification (not a sales blurb) and likely cheaper. Tell them what it is for. Also...

    Can I change a 250 whet for 200 diamond?

A diamond wheel is just that diamonds bonded to the surface of the wheel or in a compound of some kind. A CBN is Cubic Boron Nitride. Not quite as hard as a diamond but many times harder than Aluminium Oxide that most tool grinders use. Pete
