    A-N membership & insurance

Ok. So what aspect of insurance are you looking for? When you asked ‘are woodturners really covered’ , I assumed you were looking for insurance for your tools etc. If it’s general public liability insurance you’re after, you need to go on Money Super Market etc. D.

    A-N membership & insurance

Carry book, I’ve looked at a web-site (A-N PPL Artists insurance ) which I presume is the company you mention. The company appears to offer insurance for those engaged in ‘artistic pursuits’ - it mentions, among others, photography, glass making , ceramics, drawing and painting, textiles...

Another newbie looking for a lathe

Cheers, Phil. Looks like you got in at just the right time (TP closing). I agree with you about variable speed. Having once had a lathe with fixed speeds , I wouldn’t now look at a lathe that didn’t have VS. D.

Another newbie looking for a lathe

Hi Phil Generally good advice, but I’m not sure about the Versachuck issue. I was told by another turner that he swore by the Versachuck, as the backplate could be changed to enable different spindles to be used, and, also, that the jaws made by other manufacturers could be used on it. I was...

    Turning at 54A

Does anyone know what’s happened to Keith Barrow who used to put turning videos on YouTube, under the title Turning at 54 A? I used to watch them with interest; he seemed like a nice guy, and I got some good tips from his more adventurous projects. D.

    Floor-standing pillar drill column

Isn’t that just typical of Sod’s law? Hope you get it sorted. D.

    Floor-standing pillar drill column

I’m not sure I understand this idea of increasing the capacity of a pillar drill by simply inserting a longer column. Isn’t the main limiting factor on a pillar drill the travel distance of the chuck? I can see that you will be able to get ‘deeper’ ‘higher’ pieces under the chuck, but will...

    Dangerous Pallets?

I don’t think any newspapers can be entirely trusted to print what can be relied on, but those at the lower end are usually the worst offenders when it comes to half-truths, distortions, and plain lies. D

    Non-ferrous metal turning

John, The Turnado system looks like a great little bit of kit, that looks like the answer to Snefttymakes dream. The basic kit is £140. The downside is that it has to be used on a small metal turning lathe. I have looked at the website (in Australia),, and there is currently UK distributor but...

    Non-ferrous metal turning

But if the hose you’ve got isn’t too good for passing water, you get or develop a better one. That’s what is meant by progress .

    Non-ferrous metal turning

So Woodturning lathes weren’t up to the requirements of the job. I rest my case. D.

    Non-ferrous metal turning

There are a couple of videos on you tube showing metal turning on wood turning lathes ( including turning stainless steel), so, as some of the guys have said, it is possible. I still wouldn’t do it, believing in the general principle of ‘the right tool for the right job’. If wood turning...

    Non-ferrous metal turning

Jamesc I take your point about the difference in complexity between metal working lathes and Woodturning lathes. But I think I would still be a bit wary of turning non ferrous metals on my lathe on the grounds that there is a difference in abrasiveness between metal swarf and wood shavings...

    Non-ferrous metal turning

If you’re turning chunks of brass, the shavings (swarf), could get into the headstock spindle (and then where?) or under the headstock affecting the lathe bed and headstock travel. Who knows? it might not happen, but just as I wouldn’t cut nonferrous metal on my bandsaw, I would shy away from...

    Non-ferrous metal turning

I’ve no idea if your plan is sound, but i would think twice about turning metal on my lathe because I would worry about where any swarf might get. D

    Hole saw

Hi Guys, Used the drill round the perimeter method. Not the cleanest finish in the world, but will do for my purpose. Thanks for all your help. D

    Hole saw

Thanks, guys. I’ll forget the holesaw route (although it says on the tin ‘for use with metal, wood...), and try something else. I have a 35mm Famag Forstner bit, but I‘m a bit reluctant to use it for this job, (just a stand for wood lathe tool rests), in case it gets knackered. I might try...
