    Use of lacewood

Thanks for your input, Richard. Two really nice projects using London Plane wood. Given Bob’s comments, I thought I should check with my source for the lacewood blanks. He told me that they are all Roupala. Bit of a quandary now. To turn, or not to turn? That is the question.

    Use of lacewood

Hi Guys, I have been given some lacewood bowl blanks. I’ve never turned this wood before, so I looked it up on the Wood Data base to see what its working properties are. For example, it is said to blunt tools easily. There were, however, quite a number of users who reported some allergic...

Perhaps a slightly controversial turning question...

You do not have to fill your house with knick-knacks. Enjoy the process of making them, then either sell them, or give them away. If you get no enjoyment from turning, sell the lathe to someone who will. D.

    Spindle gouge use

I have been watching some of the recent Richard Raffan videos. He is clearly still a master woodturner who makes everything look easy. One of the things he does is to rough out and shape the outside of bowls using just a spindle gouge. It looks easy, but I have always been taught that spindle...

    Grinding distances

Hi Guys I’ve acquired a OneWay type sharpening system , with the ‘swinging’ gouge clamp thingummy. Can any explain how I calculate the distance the pivot slide needs to be out for different bevel angles? Mike Waldt recently put a video on YouTube where he showed the use of bits of wood to set...

    Camera problem

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. Unfortunately, It’s not possible to open the camera to use an air compressor, and there seem to be quite a number of software updates available for Canon cameras, and I wouldn’t know which one to download. I think the best thing I can do is to take it into a...

    Camera problem

Hi Guys, I have a Canon IXUS 900Ti digital camera. Just recently the pictures I take have started to be out of focus, but not all the time. The occasional shot is fine. The image on the back screen prior to shooting is also blurred most of the time but not always. I’ve adjusted the focus on the...

    Resin use

Thanks, guys. Some really helpful advice. I’ll get some 5 minute resin and thin CA, and have a go at sorting the blanks out during turning them. D.

    Resin use

Thanks, Phil. I’d never heard of cactus juice resin. Having watched a couple of YouTube videos about its use, I have discovered that it is fabulously expensive, needs a vacuum chamber, mixing equipment, and maybe a microwave oven. I think i’ll convert my eucalyptus blanks into tooth picks or...

    Resin use

I need some advice. I bought a couple of eucalyptus bowl blanks recently. Both of them are generally ok, but both have a few shallow splits across the faces, and what look like rows of tooling/milling marks about 2-3 mm deep on the edges.(see photo). I thought I might use resin to fill in these...

Should I cut my arbor to be able to bore deeper?

I’m not sure I understand what the problem is here. You say that the chuck ejects after only 3.5 cm of travel, but ejection occurs as you’re winding the quill in, not out. If you cut the arbor off it won’t make any difference to the drilling capacity, because the distance the taper is inside the...
