    Powered Respirators

Hi Blister As a retired medical professional I appreciate the need to protect the respiratory system as a whole ( i.e.not just the lungs) from harm, and the need to spend as much as you can afford to do so, bearing in mind the nature and intensity of your work. I think the problem is more acute...

    Powered Respirators

It seems to me that powered respirators are as ridiculously expensive as everything else associated with wood turning. D.

    Powered Respirators

Thanks, Pete. My comment was given ‘tongue in cheek’. Nobody should act in such a way that, potentially, they put themselves in need of expensive medical treatment, no matter who picks up the bill.

    Powered Respirators

I note that you are in Canada, so lung transplant and associated medication would cost a fortune. Here in the UK we have the NHS.... Not that is any recommendation to not use dust protection!!!

    Powered Respirators

Blister, Do you have the Sundstrom 570SR with the Sundstrom 500 respirator? D.

    Powered Respirators

Cheers, Blister. I’ll have a look at the details. While, given sensible precautions, it is probably rare for blanks to come off a lathe, it does happen, and that is why I rate impact protection so highly. D.

    Powered Respirators

Blister, Do these products protect against impact (such as might happen with a blank coming off a lathe) , or are they solely concerned with protecting airways from particulates of various sorts? Incidentally, I’m sure that the makers of Powercap and similar will be thrilled to have their...

    Powered Respirators

As Keith says, respiratory masks are essential when working in dusty environments. They will help to prevent crippling lung diseases. However, for woodturning your mask/helmet must also provide impact protection. There are two versions of the Powercap, one provides respiratory protection in...

    Powered Respirators

I have a Powercap which i’ve had for about 4 years. I think you have to make sure that you change the filters etc regularly, and I usually brush mine down with a soft paint brush after each use. As for scratching the shield, this can be prevented by using Powercap produced stick on film. I...

Looking for first bandsaw in £1500-£2000 range

This is an interesting topic. I keep thinking i’ll get a new b/s. I currently have an old Electra Beckum 315, which with decent blades does what I want (more or less, i’m a woodturner) , but it would help if it had a deeper throat. Anyway, that’s not really the point I want to ask about. My...

    Sad news

Very sad, and a salutary lesson for all of us. It would be interesting to know what wood it was and what size the blank was . A guy in my club was killed in the same way. He was found dead by his wife when he didn’t go in for his tea.

    New Year

As the year turns, and we turn our thoughts to the future, I wish all my fellow turners a Happy New Year, with plenty of shavings and no catches. D

Thanks Paul and Robbo, I much appreciate your helpful and knowledgeable input. Good luck, Andy, with the new spindle. D

    Spindle Wobble - Charnwood W812

Thanks, Paul. Does it have to be mechanically held? It seems to me that it wouldn’t be possible to hold it by hand if it is to measure thousands of an inch. Natural tremor would interfere with measurements so fine. D

    Spindle Wobble - Charnwood W812

An interesting discussion, guys. But a bit mystifying to someone like me with very little mechanical/ engineering knowledge. What’s a ‘dial type indicator’ and how do you use one? D.
