    Small Olive box

Hi Adam Another great piece. I notice that you use a lot of olive wood for your pieces. Where do you get it? I have been trying to get some for a while, but without success. D

    Sorby Ring gouge

Adam, Good luck with that, mate. It looks as though a catch could be lethal. It was obviously discontinued by Sorby for good reasons. D.

    Cut and polish ?

Hi Blister I’ve used it occasionally, but I prefer to use Yorkshire grit followed by Hampshire sheen. I think it gives a better finish, but others may differ. D

    Sodalite

Cheers, Kim Don’t know why it didn’t come up on any of my searches, but there’s obviously tons of the stuff out there. D

    Sorby Ring gouge

Hi Guys, Thanks for the info. It is the one Sneggysteve referred to, and that Suffolkboy and Hornbean have used. Judging from their experience and Phil’s input, it would seem to point to Sorby discontinuing it because turners didn’t like it. I think I’ll give it a miss, and stick to my gouges...

    Sorby Ring gouge

Hi Guys I’ve been offered a Sorby ring gouge (not captive ring tool). Does anyone have any experience with this for hollowing? I can’t find it listed on the Sorby website, so I’m assuming it’s been discontinued. If it has been, it’s a bit ominous. Best wishes D.

    Sodalite

Cheers Droogs and Marcos. You might be right, Marcos. I searched on Google for it, but Etsy didn’t come up. Spooky or what? D.

    Sodalite

Hi guys There’s a video on YouTube by Sprague (a Canadian woodturner ) setting out a method for fixing a funnelled bowl, ie a bowl in which the bottom has been broken through. (We’ve all done it!). It seems like a good rescue. Anyway, in the course of this fix, he did some inlay type-work using...

    Olive & Pewter lidded box

Hi Adam What do you use to melt and pour the pewter? Where do you get the pewter, and how do you make the castings? Best wishes D.

    Alternative for tormek?

I’ve tried a number of sharpening systems, including the Tormek . I gradually became disillusioned with the Tormek for all the reasons Eshmiel mentioned above. I was tipped over the edge by the problem I found when trying to replace the grind stone, finding that fixings for it were rusted and...

    Turning shavings

Cooper I am no expert gardener, and I have always spread turnings on my garden with no apparent problems arising. After a few weeks they seem to be absorbed. Having said that, I have read conflicting advice about this ; some says that using turnings/ clippings can lead to reduction of nitrogen...

    Lathe Light

Retired Colin I am mightily impressed by your efforts to keep your workshop clean. I only wish I could do the same. I always put my tools away, and I use my Henry regularly, together with brush and dust pan. Nevertheless, try as I might, the place is never clear completely of turnings and saw...

    Lathe Light

I have two of the Charnwood lamps, one on my bandsaw, and one on the headstock of my lathe. Most of the time I don’t need them as I have good strip lighting over both machines. When I do need them, I’ve found them to be more than adequate , the added bonus being that they can be moved easily...

    The Toolpost

I had an email this morning telling me they are closing down, and that there is 25%off everything. ‘Once it’s gone it’s gone’. I’ve had a look at the website, and it confirms they are closing, and that there is 25% off all stock. Much of it seems to have gone already, particularly tools! Get in...

    Rechucking wobble

Thanks, Dalboy, I’ve checked the diameter at a number of points, and they all come out spot on 8 inches. I think the problem might be with the base of the mortise. Anyway, it doesn’t look too bad, so I don’t think I’ll mess with it again. I’ve attached a photo.
