    Spirit stains

Thanks, guys, in particular Terry Smart. I much appreciate you taking the trouble to offer advice.. As I noted in my original post, I applied the stain, and then used Chestnut cellulose sanding sealer. I didn’t thin it, as I didn’t know you should when applying over stain (am I right?). What...

    Spirit stains

Thanks, Kim. I’ll do what you suggest in future; apply the stain, leave for 24 hours, and then apply sealer/lacquer. It might be useful if that was on the tin, rather then the claim that the stain can accept other finishes after about 10 minutes drying time. Best wishes D

    Top Gear near death

I I had an MG Midget in my youth nearly 60 years ago, but I gave it up when I married for a more family friendly dull, boring metal box. The Midget wasn’t a Lamborghini, but I enjoyed driving it. Now, as you say, I drive another ‘dull, boring metal box’. It gets me around ok, which, as far as I...

    Top Gear near death

It might as well have been replaced by stock car driving. That’s interesting and fun, if you like that sort of thing.

    Top Gear near death

I remember Top Gear in the 70’s when it was a consumer programme about cars. That is, the ordinary cars that the average man/woman might think about buying. They gave straightforward assessments of the cars’ pros and cons, and it was helpful for car buyers. They also looked at developments in...

    What's the Trick ???

I got a copy of this book recently (new £12). It is described as a re-print but is actually photocopied pages of the original book, nicely bound as a paper back. Like all photocopied books, some of the details in the original pages are a bit blurry. The book covers spindle work in some detail...

    Spirit stains

Hi guys I’m new to using coloured stains on turnings. I stained the wide rim of a beech bowl yesterday using Chestnut spirit stain. It says on the tin that once the stain is dry (about 10 minutes after application) that it will accept other finishes. I put the stain on to sanded bare wood...

Help with Sorby texturing and spiralling tool.

Thanks, Paul. I’ll try that, but I wonder why Sorby say to always have the brass screw on top. Best wishes D
