    First metal lathe advice

    M42 is 8%, many others are 5%or less. https://www.rennietool.co.uk/collections/hss-m42-8-cobalt-fully-ground-toolbits

    First metal lathe advice

If you end up buying HSS blanks for grinding your own, try to get some with a high Cobalt content. They stay sharper longer than the cheaper stuff.

Multi tools, huh! What are they good for?

Both are surprisingly useful. It’s a shame my Alox SAK doesn’t have them. An oversight by Victorinox.

Multi tools, huh! What are they good for?

I’ve got a leatherman in the boot of my car somewhere, just in case.

    Sharpening

High Speed Steel. I just bought a replacement 10° carbide rod and made the rest. This is the commercial one. https://www.classichandtools.com/veritas-scraper-burnisher-for-woodturners/p2029?srsltid=AfmBOop2XhOMLlkdzKdFrAOR6whWKh0zUsSzKpH7eKsrgByknPi1s6zZ9uo

Multi tools, huh! What are they good for?

This is my personal favourite SAK. Sadly now discontinued. The pliers although small are surprisingly useful. As are the wood and metal saws.

Multi tools, huh! What are they good for?

Apologies, it’s a Swiss Army Knife. 😉 Edit: This is the one I normally carry but I have six or seven others with pliers, saws etc.

    Sharpening

I’ve started using a Burnisher for my wood turning scrapers and the burr you get is really sharp and more durable than anything straight from a grinder. I sharpen the scraper on an 800g belt, remove the burr then press a new one on with the Burnisher. When it dulls you can go back to the...

Multi tools, huh! What are they good for?

This is the problem, and whilst I’d like to carry one I don’t. I carry a SAK instead. All I really need most of the time is a blade and a pair of scissors but I’ve not found anything I like.

There are some lovely small old lathes out there. I saw these on a FB group.

    A bit Mad?!

I posted this in the Joke thread. But it seems to me it’s not far from the truth. Last week I was driving along the road and there was a guy walking along the pavement with one of these things. He was blowing dirt and dust off the pavement onto the drives and front gardens of the houses...

Are we being ripped off by tool retailers?

About 50 years ago I was paying around *£17 for a pair of Levi’s and £5 for a white T shirt. Levi’s may be in the £80 to £120 range these days (but the quality isn’t as good) but I bought some nice looking jeans from Sainsburys a while back for £15 and a T shirt was still a fiver. * There was...

    The new hammer

I’ve got over 30 hammers but only two or three are claw hammers, I rarely use one. If I did, I might have a look at one of those snazzy Titanium jobs?! 😆 Still on my list is a traditional Japanese Hammer, not sure what weight though. Any suggestions?

Is this getting a bit out of hand? - RSV jabs

Lockdown was not an option for many early on. It was for us though and we went into voluntary lockdown three weeks before the Government made it official as we thought they were dragging their feet.
