Looking at the picture, it’s soaking in more where you sanded it. Across the grain as well.

No it doesn’t, you’re looking at the wrong model. The FM1000 has proprietary OZ collets: The machine you’ve looked at is the Mafell FM1000 PV-ER. This does indeed take standard ER collets but costs £122 more than the FM1000...

I was honing some small HSS cutters with an 800g belt on my Ultimate Edge the other day. The join in the belt was a bit of a nuisance but I turned the speed right down and it solved the issue. Sometimes I also get a better edge by running the belt in the opposite direction for some reason.

Are you using a jig?

I got the impression years ago that even Tormek realised that removing chips or reshaping tools on a wet grinder can be very tedious. That’s why they introduced their guide setup for bench grinders, leaving the Tormek for just the final sharpening. I’m sure it works well, but you do need two...

Anyone got one, are they worth the money? I’m after a milling motor that takes 8mm shanks and goes down to 4,000 rpm like the FM1000. Best price I’ve seen is just under £300 with the postage and additional collets are over £25 each so it’s not cheap.

From what I’ve read a few times, wet grinders like the Tormek are too slow for general duty on turning tools.

I’ve got one. I never fitted the graphite pad that came with it as from experience with another machine it deforms in use causing rounded bevels. It’s a great machine for turning tools. Ideally though you do need some decent jigs to get the best from it. I don’t do flat work but the Axminster...
