It's just a word. It does confuse the, er.. "unimaginative". Actions speak louder than words.

The Nazis thought along the same lines. Funny how consistent right wing thought stays, over the generations! Eugenics isn't fashionable any longer BTW.

Of course there isn't "equality" as they all have different capabilities; there are changing roles but basically all working for the benefit of all in the pack. Tory policy (dog eat dog) would wreck a wolf pack!

If you have the money you can buy your way in without having any talent or ability at all. That is the whole point of private education and is a great weakness in a democratic society. It might be if there was a level playing field with equal opportunities.

In general pack animals like us are not competitive within the pack. That is the whole point of being a pack animal. The competition is outside the pack - against the environment and other animals.

For most purposes you don't need a jig at all and it's much quicker. They don't feature in any of the old books, everybody managed without them. You definitely don't need one for the gouge and straight chisel shown in that Axminster site above!

Nonsense. Straw-man argument. Simplistic equality is not the issue, nor fairness, nor left wing ideology.

And often getting sacrificed at the end of term. Not unlike our own Prime Ministers. You should read David Graeber "The Dawn of Everything" - it casts a completely different light on the basic common assumptions about earlier communities and ways of life. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Graeber

Rubbish. Evolution gave us the ability and the means to cooperate and work together. Basic survival meant we should work as a pack and human achievement has always been down to the power of massive support and mutual cooperation. The competition driving evolution is not with each other, it's...

I never said anything of the sort! What I do say is that to demonise "socialism" on the one hand, or on the other to idealise socialism as a system waiting to replace the existing system, is to ignore the fact that we all are already living by it to a large extent.

Straight edges and simple spindle gouges are really easy to freehand, and it's the best way as you can keep refreshing the edge as you go, with very little interruption. Bowl gouges less so, but not impossible. Handy to have a sanding disc on your out-board end then you don't need any other sort...

You think everybody should be merchant bankers? If they were, do you think they could manage without "basket makers", delivery drivers etc. What, they should just relax and allow the re-introduction of slavery? Are low wages too high in your opinion? No one wants to pay rents but they don't...

Well you did at one point. It's a shifting target. So what? Do you seriously think this is a decision which people freely make? There are millions of low paid workers putting in long hours on tedious jobs, probably working harder and under greater pressure than you. It's a total delusion that...

    Favourite hand plane and why

Come to think mine is the ECE scrub. Small and light but removes material faster than anything else. I use it for cleaning up old reclaimed or painted timber, which I think is its original purpose - theres a clue in the name! Then an old Record 5 1/2 I never got on with a 4 1/2 nor a 6, the 5...

Who decides on the merit in a meritocracy? Many ordinary workers work harder and for longer hours than most, but for low wages and insecure jobs. Conversely, bankers traditionally work 3/6/3, meaning borrow at 3%, lend at 6%, be on the golf course at 3PM. OK it's an entertaining old cliche but...

Working class tends to mean people who work for wages generally so low that they do not accumulate wealth. It used to mean unskilled or semi skilled but the boundaries become blurred as the nature of work changes. Definitions become loose descriptions, not always useful. The book to read is...

    US Election November 5th

My guess is that the Republicans will dump Trump at the last minute and substitute something slightly more humanoid in a lighter shade of orange.
