    Old school horsing around

This afternoon I tenoned all the rails at the same time only cutting 6 off to one inch(the 2 mid rails ×3 frames) I glued them all up and wedged them checking for square using a lovely simple tool from the victorian era that's really useful on things that haven't been cut off or in this case...

    Old school horsing around

It's not really a full build tbf as I'd done most preparation weeks ago. I started by marking the uprights for morticing all together. Can also sing the praises of the little traversing stops for repetitive joinery on a sedgwick there at the back like 2 fiddly buttons on a bar. These aren't...

    Old school horsing around

Thought you guys might appreciate this old fashioned clothes horse build. I used beech uprights and redwood rails( to cut down the weight) I highly recommend this as a pre cursor to say window making or any joinery items as if your techniques can make this well square and neatly then much...

best pound for pound all round router?

Most of the interesting bits are 1/2 inch. Using it by hand usually makes the most interesting solutions. Accuracy is incredibly important. So 1/2 inch small and very accurate. Great dust extraction. Must be of2200!

    Series 3: Britain's Best Woodworker

I will only say that there are very few things that are less fun than " fine cabinetmaking" (maybe fine art)

    Series 3: Britain's Best Woodworker

Well I decided I wasn't going to watch after a few episodes of the previous but really enjoyed the bench one so I may be back in! Some are accomplished and others are a bit remedial I guess the producers are after personality above all. It does depend on what they are making as some projects are...

Buying green logs for windsor chairs

Just so you know how to fit stretchers properly. Fit your legs in the sockets with the stretcher holes facing correctly. Measure using 2 sticks in the stretcher holes. Cut 1/2 inch or more over length. Put stretchers in legs with glue on everything. Put sockets into seat holes and bash them in...

Buying green logs for windsor chairs

Just to explain why legs socketed into seats at the back is a very stressed joint. And round mortice and tenons are not amazingly strong having no shoulder to speak of and not always made real tight ( as they should be. ) because of assembly / disassembly they can get loose quick. And pva won't...

Buying green logs for windsor chairs

They push outwards so the stretchers are longer than the measure. It's possible to make a chair without stretchers BUT unless there clunky they wobble after a few seasons. And oft times they wobble when built. English windsors have thin seats. Us windsors use very thick white pine seats.

Buying green logs for windsor chairs

they used sawn elm for the seats. And mature coppice Ash or beech never normally oak. The best were made from yew which needs lots of experience with selection for steam bending( saplings are often used.) Any decent straightish tree will split into lengths for the legs. Working green wood is a...

Number of Dominos needed to support shelf?

I reckon getting all those dominoes in the right place will be a pain. I'm frankly amazed you have a domino xl but no means to make some housing joints! How about ply or solid? To a man with a hammer everything looks like nail. With more appropriate materials a few screws would be as good maybe...

    Carving chisels - starter advice

Those aren't made by marples and are almost unusable(there made by noitgedacht and are dreadful) I reckon start with 4 or 5 no more. And get them sharp . What your making will determine which 4 or 5. Ashley illes are also poor IMHO. But many other brands are good some are great but I love stubai.
