    Mutter moulder in the wild

No I got my kicks from finding it. Then tracing some interesting history. It was a 16 or 18 round I've got enough( these bigger ones are always the survivors often not used) I'm on de aquisition. But I hope it goes to some user. It took me a long time to get my moulders working well and some...

    Mutter moulder in the wild

Same stamp but rounder more bulbous wedge and wider Chambers. It was in remarkable unpolished nick. The gouge cut was similar.

Oddly I'm much less interested in tools now I do it full time.

    Harrogate reviews

I find the mix both exciting and a bit jarring tbh. Many old guys with plenty to spend but little room. Often turners Younger hand tool hipsters. I'm guessing this crowd could be seduced by the dark side(cnc). Ironic though it seems. Some big pro shops must attend but often its small joiner...

    Sharpening twist drill bits freehand

A simple guide to whether or not your drill cut is to gently rotate into your palm you will feel the cutting edge if you've got relief. Also I experimented to try a make a drill drill a slightly bigger hole by offset grinding the centre point. It takes a decent offset and a chunky drill to work...

    Mutter moulder in the wild

It appears it was around 250 years old! And made in London. I hope someone buys it who gains some interest from this lovely relic. It was £5. Its 100per cent 18thc as he retired by 1799. But 1750-1770 seems the closest style to me. I consider all the woodworkers that may have owned this and the...

    Harrogate reviews

Nic Westerman was there with his forged tools. I try and chat but I suspect I'd have more joy if I was in the market so to speak. The Indian guy selling Damascus knives was a bit out of place but always seemed popular tbh. Skelton saws I've interacted with a few years but I got an urge to get...

    Harrogate reviews

I watched a guy buy one of those gripper things and couldn't help thinking it was a bit dangerous and extremely expensive as well. How these things ever gain traction is odd. ( passing anyb hand directly over the blade is not ever to be encouraged)

    Harrogate reviews

Hoffman weren't there this year. But those woodmiser machines looked great( planer/moulders) but those demonstrators were a bit lacklustre I think they must have demoed to garage woodies a bit to much!

    Harrogate reviews

The guy with the plastic sharpening thing had a great story and was a great demonstrator. That method of sharpening was his idea he went into partnership with another company who then sold that to trend. Despite looking a bit cornflake box the system works extremely well and is well thought...

    Harrogate reviews

For my part I welcomed a few different stalls this year. Seemed like a few individuals Shenton woodcraft, the joiner with the holtley planes, the guy with the plastic sharpening idea( sharpsomething) Le tonkinois was absent. Brake disc drill man was preaching to no one. Classic hand tools I...

    Mutter moulder in the wild

Yesterday I was at Harrogate enjoying a browse around. At on stall that was mostly cheap car boot new tools there was a box of moulders one I instantly recognised as old. It was a round and stamped mutter. How old is this maker? I think I've got a xxxx late mutter somewhere. The other 20 planes...

Tips on marking out / scribing structural timbers - like rafters etc

I would make the birds mouth cuts on short scrap at both ends. Then measure from a prominent feature at the top to one at the bottom. The scrap let's you have a few goes and make sure its aligned properly.

Who makes the best ball bearing 3” and 4” hinges these days?

    Wood worm in Elm

Cut off all the sap and bark and burn. Then steam or freeze(freezing is 2 step). Maybe then use chemicals. It's a real pain with elm( and beech)

    Harrogate Offers - Festool

There's not many offers at Harrogate these days. But I always get a buzz looking around. The guy who drills brake discs is possibly the least interesting. I'd suggest maybe a quarter of these stalls haven't read the theme properly. Other people who should be there arent( philly planes, that's...

    Which anvil?

Cast iron aren't anvils as there crap. That leaves cast steel and wrought iron with a tool steel top.. brooks are great cast steel anvils. They ring loudly but are superb. Most vintage anvils are wrought iron. Peter Wright are probably the best. Wilkinson, Mousehole etc. Are older.
