    Spindle moulder tilting head

I have a Moretens spindle which tilts forward and backwards as well as going in reverse. I don't think I've ever used it for mouldings tilted forward but I often tilt it backwards. In the days of Whitehill blocks, you could rotate your cutters in the block to get different profiles. Now, with...

How to cut this shape accurately?

I would use the track saw as Fitzroy says- make up a box that can sit under the track, with some means of locating the track on it- and use the hole plus the bottom face to locate the workpiece in the jig.

    Help.

I've had success with pozi screws by using a 2mm drill bit to clear the middle of the screw, and then driving a pozi screwdriver in with a mallet, followed by getting out the screw with an impact driver. It works every time pretty much. Whether this is at all bearable for hundreds, I don't know!

    Knee pads?

I like strappy ones. I've had a pair for years that had 2 straps each side, and they were always slipping and coming undone. Then one time I lost a strap and had to wear one with a single strap. Total transformation! With one strap they aren't straining against each other and very comfortable.

How do you do it? Your business

I use an Ecxel spreadsheet to do my quotes. Put in all your materials, then break the job down into chunks- machining, finishing etc. You can put in a multiplier for VAT, uplift, etc. Don't look at the bottom line until you have finished. If it seems very high or low, you might want to go...

    Bevel Box Advice

A vote for the Gemred. I use it all the time. Its accuracy is quoted as .2deg which if true is good enough for woodwork.

Have you thought about who really can afford what you make and if it's something they actually want?

I have had similar thoughts. I'm a boomer myself (1961) so maybe I don't need to worry too much personally, but I don't think you need to be so pessimistic about boomers retiring- lots of my clients are retired. I think they have got to the point where they aren't supporting their kids anymore...

    Spindle moulder or router table?

Hi Roy, they don't usually take router cutters unless you have a special spindle to take them (usually only available for Felder etc) It's all about scale really. You ca I have a Logosol spindle/shaper. I would like one of those four cutter things but no way would it replace the spindle. No...

Woodwork design software other than Sketchup ?

Another vote for Turbocad. It's not as intuitive as Solidworks or Sketchup but it's much cheaper than SW and much more useful than SU.

    Straight edge…twisted cut! Help

All timber adopts a shape which is a compromise between all the opposing forces in it. Unless these forces are identical on either side of your cut, there's going to be movement. The difference between seasoned and green timber in this circumstance is that the seasoned timber will move once...

    What wood again

Yours could be alder although it looks quite pale compared to what I've used, which is very similar to cherry in colour.

    Push sticks again.......

They did- I have one. I am self-taught mainly and have ALWAYS used a long fence for almost everything. The only kickback I have ever had was while crosscutting something wide and not very long on someone else's table saw. Having said that, I'll probably get paid back for being complacent! My...

    Wood for moulding planes

Hi Johnny, how do you date a plane like that? I can see there is a difference in the wedge- is that it? Pete

    Wood for moulding planes

Out of 90 moulding planes in my workshop, 89 are beech and 1 is mahogany. It doesn't have a makers mark and is unfinished which makes me think it's a shop-made plane. The beech planes are often stained dark brown.

    Rail saw wierdness

I have tried a couple of cuts -going very slowly in case it's harmonics in the blade making it wobble. One cut, in a bit of veneered MDF, closed up perfectly, while the other, longways down a sheet of MF MDF, had a 2mm gap. So not very helpful! The gap is tapered like a very squashed rugby ball...

    Rail saw wierdness

I’ve noticed a strange thing with my railsaw. It’s a bit hard to see from the photo but when the two cut pieces are pushed together there’s a 1mm gap in the middle, tapering to nothing at both ends. It’s the same for all cuts. It can’t be the rail slipping as this would look a lot different. The...
