Another mystery tool, maybe not so mysterious!

My first thought was that it is a bale hook.

    Panel optimiser?

I don't know.. I've done it both ways, a lot! Basically, for 20 years up to about 10 years ago I did it your way, and for the last 10 years or so I've used the optimiser for most jobs apart from ones with figured timber or where the grain is a big deal such as table tops, drawer fronts etc. I am...

    Panel optimiser?

I retract the previous comments! I was using Cutlist which has a similar title on a browser. Opticut seems good. Thanks. Pete

    Panel optimiser?

I have had a go with it, it's ok- a bit slow and the diagrams are hard to read (I use panel optimising for timber as well as sheet materials, at the moment I'm cutting some 5 meter boards and the diagrams opticutter produces are almost unreadable. Maybe I'll just have to relearn the art of...

    Panel optimiser?

Hi, has anyone got a good one of these to recommend? Preferably free and downloadable!

    Maxcut users beware

I just updated Maxcut only to find that they have removed some useful features for the free version, plus some of what's left doesn't work as well.

    Sending furniture to the USA

Hi, has anyone any experience of sending things to the USA? I have been asked to make a coffee table, from reclaimed meranti and containing two printers type cases. I have an idea that there are phytosanitary rules about exporting to the US- any info about this or the general process gratefully...

    Castor Spacing for Moveable Cabinets

I had exactly your problem. I had an assembly bench/cabinet with 6 legs which I decided to make moveable. The obvious solution was to put a castor on each leg. It led to the problems described above and was also quite hard to push. I ended up taking out the middle two castors, and beefing up the...

Using foil-backed Insulation Board as sacrificial board while cutting Plywood

I always cut celotex etc with a knife as I have no wish to inhale fine plastic dust! I’d definitely use a bit of OSB.

    Softwood for table tops?

If you want to stain it, I’ve had good results using washing soda and/or vandyke crystals on pine. Especially washing soda as it affects both kinds of grain.

    Veneering question

(And vintage Frames) yes- that’s my dilemma. I know I could veneer it but can I make it look effortless? There’s a lot of other stuff going into this project- glass, stone, leather and fabric, lots of steel and gadgets. The nightmare would be if it all came together at a cost of several 10s of...

    Veneering question

Hi, it's white oak as it has to match some veneered MDF. The way they have drawn it, all the grain runs parallel to the floor, so top and bottom are long grain and the uprights are cross grain. I was thinking of making the ground from MDF. I can get a very long bag from Bagpress- they will cut...

    Veneering question

I’ve been thinking along the same lines. Going to wait and see if the client sticks to his guns or if he suggests some changes.

    Veneering question

Yes, that's what I was thinking. I think the problem is Sketchup Syndrome- the easy drawing of cool looking stuff that's very hard to make! I have said I can't do it in its present form. I know I could make something OK, but I'm not sure I could make it look sharp and crisp.
