After a little advice about ideal wood for bar surface

How about old scaffold boards? They may be softwood but they are very hard-wearing especially as you want them distressed. Scaffolding companies have to renew them every 2 years I think, and sell off the old ones. I've seen counters made from them in a busy hardware store (Mackays of Cambridge)...

Got 99 problems and the motor is one

If it hums but doesn't turn when you switch it on, but runs when you give it a flick, it's the capacitor. I don't know enough to say which one is broken, but you can often tell by looking. It may well have some leakage etc. I generally take mine to my local electric motor rewinds people and they...

Incra iBox - Anyone familiar with it?

It looks like a problem with the positioning of the stop that you slide the boards up to. This will set the side-to-side positioning of the workpiece. it can't be the height of the cutter, as it's in the wrong plane.

Live edge Table Knot/Crack filling recommendation.

I have Liberon ground pigments- burnt umber, red ochre, yellow ochre, and black- which I mix with neutral epoxy filler in whatever blend matches. It's usually best to make it a bit darker than the wood as it doesn't stand out, unless the wood is quite pale. If it's a large knot I sometimes fill...

    Rocking chair design

I made the rocking chair in the picture about 20 years ago. It's not quite right comfort-wise, and I threw away the jigs years ago. I now want to make another one, and am having a bit of a job with the ergonomics. Does anyone have any knowledge/ideas regarding the basics, like the angle of seat...

    Which dust extractor

I've done exactly that! Only to take the fine dust off the top of the blade, though- I think it would be a bit of a pain using it for the whole lot- you'd have to empty it every 5 mins

    Probox custom drawers

Probox are excellent. It is very important to check the dims before you put in the order. I have had a couple of mistakes- one mine, one theirs- which have led to an expensive pile of scrap! When it was their fault, they replaced them for free and with no argument. Pete

    Another wood ID question.

You could try taking a shaving. Iroko has a very particular smell quite unlike any other wood I've ever used.

Does anyone recognise this type of bandsaw?

I used to have one. I think it was called a Capitol? The main thing that drove me mad about it was that the blade would often jump off the wheels. Whether this was a fault with the model or with that particular machine I don't know. I never found a way of curing it and eventually sold it to a...

    Cherry Wood

Can I ask why you want to dry it? It's so much nicer to turn when it's green!

    What am I doing wrong

My understanding of the reasons why it is better to cut from the outside to the middle is that the wood is travelling faster as you go out. Therefore, if you are going inwards, the wood is continually decelerating and is less likely to snatch. I think that how much you take off is more affected...

    myford ml8 - decent 1st lathe?

I had one for years and it drove me mad. Aluminium is not a good material for lathes. It vibrates too much. If you want to turn bowls you will have to be very careful and do a lot of sanding. I know you only want to do the odd doorknob, but if you enjoy turning, you will want to go further(and...
