    aftermarket replacement drill driver batteries

Buy a new complete tool in the sales it will be much better, lighter, more powerful and longer running than your old tools. I have tried a DeWalt battery adapter but in reality it only worked on low power tools and could not run a saw or SDS. I also wasted some money on new Chinese batteries with...

Snipe, what am I doing wrong?

A planer with long tables will help straighten a plank but a thicknesses has much shorter tables and the timber is held down by the rollers. I think using a long plank to extend the thicknesser bed will not bring any benefits and may cause problems . Snipe can be caused if you don't support the...

    That's odd!

For HSE purposes it's a chip collector which will pick up large particles, fine dust will pass through the filter. If you want better dust removal you can get more expensive filters or wheel it outside when you use it.

    Slate roof ridge tiles Help

A few top corners missing won't make your roof leak, some slates are triangular head and they work fine. The problem seems to be they have been recycled and re-holed with the new hole above the old so water running down the roof will get through. To bed the ridge I use a hydraulic lime and sand...

    Which Plywood for Bed Slats

Ply slats will not be as strong as pine slats due to all the cross grain. Flexible pre sprung slats can make the mattress feel very different in a way you may or may not like.

    Herringbone/parquet flooring

The subfloor must be reasonably flat for a floating floor or the t&g gets stressed and can come apart over time. Fitting wise use the manufacturer's recommendations, there's various different systems, hence the internet confusion. Glueless clic together engineered planks and parquet are...

Try Ballantines castings in Boness just outside Edinburgh, they probably did the original one and have likely still got the pattern. For a cheaper option get some masking tape and paint it on.

    Wooden shower cubicle, finish advice

A work top oil like osmo top oil might work, it is designed to be cleaned regularly with kitchen cleaners so might last well and like all oils can be recoated and patched in easily. If going the resin route something like Rustin's plastic wood or an international two pack yatch varnish will...

Proof that end grain joints are stronger than side-grain joints

Here's what I learned: 1. Glue works 2. Wood can be split quite easily 3. A plank is stronger along the length than across the width To be fair I knew all that already.

Shed Build - Vapour Barrier and Insulation Help

Regarding Martin's diagrams above I think they are wrong. Vapour barrier, a thin plastic impermeable sheet goes on the warm (internal) side of the insulation. If there's a service void it goes behind the void, the void is internal and so heated and not subject to condensation risk ,also any...

My wife asked me to pass her a lipstick but I gave her a glue stick by accident. It was an innocent mistake but she hasn't spoken to me since.

Shed Build - Vapour Barrier and Insulation Help

If you're using sheet roofing there's no need for OSB on the roof, you can drape the membrane between rafters to form gutters then batten across and nail sheets to that. If you pull the membrane tight you will need to counter batten as well. I would use a 3 or 4 X1 batten, it's stronger and you...

Shed Build - Vapour Barrier and Insulation Help

I think you have breather membrane and vapour barrier mixed up. Vapour barrier is thin plastic sheet that is used on the warm side of the insulation to keep moisture from moving into the insulation. In your case the OSB can be considered a vapour barrier so you won't need an additional one. A...

No you get a 15 minute lesson then you're on your own. A week in high season will be quite pricey, about the same as a good holiday cottage,a day boat would be about £100.

How do I purchase wood from a Sawmill

Go and have a look. Have a cutting list if you have a project in mind so you know what size planks you will need, most of your lengths may be short so you can work round defects. Words like best/ prime quality have no real meaning and no one walks in asking for rubbish. The main thing is to...
