    Anybody own a holiday let?

The rates you see online aren't the rate you will regularly get. You can minus 16% for their commission ,then consider that multiple days will usually have discounts attached. Would you pay 1500 per night?

    Anybody own a holiday let?

Like anything the amount you get out will depend on the effort you put in. If an agency does everything they will take most of the money. Also be aware that the agencies interest is their business not yours, in a dispute they will favour their customer with your money .We do have a four bedrooms...

    Home library

I can recommend tonk strip as well, ironmongery direct have a selection. I would also use 18mm or even 24 mm plywood for the shelves instead of 12mm then you can reduce the lipping size and give it a lighter look.

    Aluminium tower advice please

A steel or galvanized steel scaffold tower will be much cheaper new or second hand. Unless you are regularly moving it or wheeling it about indoors then aluminum doesn't really have any advantages , mortar and aluminum don't get on well. Depending on how uneven the ground is you can just pack up...

    Workshop construction advice

Steel portal fra would seem to be the way to go, cheap, quick and the structural engineering is well understood. If you want to go all timber there are balloon frames barns in the West Coast of America which use small timbers to build massive structures , though getting a structural engineer who...

    Software for planning application

Pencil and graph paper. Sellotape to a board and Sellotape tracing paper over that so it can't move. Once it's done in pencil and you've corrected all your mistakes you can go over it with rotoring pen.

    Workshop (Garage) Door Build

Good advice above. I will add that I think the braces are a bit shallow angled,a single brace at a steeper angle will hold it square better.

    How good are Howdens kitchens?

I would say Diy kitchens and Howdens are the same quality. Howdens are more expensive, try to oversell and have a policy of not disclosing the prices. Trade like them because they give one big quote for everything you need which you can pass on to the customer with your price for fitting, then...

Making internal doors - Tulip Wood Vs Sycamore

Your drawing shows a Victorian style with fielded panel, a fairly common type, most manufacturers will do one. Before ordering I would check the weight, some doors are very light and they feel cheap. I would expect to pay around £120 for a primed door maybe less as you're getting lots.

Making internal doors - Tulip Wood Vs Sycamore

Unless you're making specials there's no point making doors. You can buy good quality standard doors for a reasonable price.

Wood stove: Insulating above the closure plate, is it common? Good idea?

Insulating with vermiculite or expanded clay round flexible liners will keep the flue gas temperature up and give a better draw. With lots of clay and concrete liners it's part of the system . I would definitely add something, even stuffing some rockwool up from underneath should help.

Thermal solar - would this work?

I think it would work but not that well . A proper evacuated tube system would be more efficient. There are brackets and systems available to ensure the roof stays waterproof .

    " Pooh Sticks"

New water and sewage connections have a large infrastructure charge added . It's over £1000 round here for water.

    " Pooh Sticks"

Gutters should not enter the septic tank piping. the problem will be the septic tank overfilling with rainwater causing it to back up into the pipe which then stops flowing and deposits the waste in the pipe . This will cause a multitude of expensive problems unless sorted quickly.

    Wood stove idea

A masonry flue will take longer to heat up than twin wall but will also then radiate the heat for longer . Once established the draught will depend on air intake on an enclosed stove . Overall I don't think worth doing.

    Which screws for cladding battens?

Nails are the correct fixing for nailing battens on. 65 to 75 mm 2.35 mm diameter galvanized. A nail will pull everything together not jack it apart, it's less likely to split the batten , won't be affected by the treatment ,is easier to remove years later and from an engineering perspective has...

    Proposed workshop build

Any paint on product on the slab edge won't do any harm and will probably help a bit. Unless you put in a dpm lapped into the dpc though it won't be perfect.

    Insulation and cladding

Good that you've done moisture plan and chosen insulation, it sounded a bit as if you were using some leftovers. Yes I was suggesting a c beam, a Larsen beam is another option, that is a ladder like beam with 8-12" rungs of OSB at 4-6' centres. Easier to make than a continuous slot for an I...

    Proposed workshop build

It contains the pour and retains the water in the mix giving a better cure and makes it easier to float. If it's all you've got it keeps the center of the slab dry .

    Proposed workshop build

Basically there's nothing you can do that isn't a bodge. Poured concrete is moderately waterproof so moisture won't move far into it. The dpm will stop moisture coming from underneath so it's only the edges you need to worry about . Keeping the edge dry is the most important thing, a gravel...
