Advice on joist support for lean-to structure

If you want a flat ceiling and fall to the roof you'll need firing strips but I'd agree it's best to avoid them if possible.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Does the bottom part of the lid slide back and forth with a slot round the hinge and is then locked in place by the top of the lid

Advice on joist support for lean-to structure

B or C depending on whether you want to pay for hangers or not. I'd give the roof a good fall 1:60 or more, there's no benefit to going flatter with modern roof types. The right hand side seems a bit over engineered, why not just add the dwarf stud and strap it down ? You'll need ends or...

Retrofitting a Hammer spiral cutter head

Why not ask Hammer ? I was told a new machine must be ordered with the head you want as they can't be swapped.

Solar panels: do they save money?

Solar PV payback is dependent on costs and feed in tariffs. The salesman will probably slightly exaggerate the benefits ,but there should still be some especially in the south. There's probably lots of other better ways to reduce bills which will also improve the EPC and so saleability and...

Sadolin Ultra vs Sadolin Classic vs Sikkens Filter 7 Plus

="TRITON, post: 1561608, member: 20607"] I know its a very informative test you're running, but isn't it usual to recoat it about once a year ?. Modern finishes often have a 5 year plus recoat schedule, some like Sikkens novatech 8 years. If it's very exposed it may shorten the time as it...

Sadolin Ultra vs Sadolin Classic vs Sikkens Filter 7 Plus

Many finishes are not ok to be walked on such as a deck so choose a deck specific finish. Nowadays finishes are often eroding, meaning that the top layer is naturally washed off leaving a good looking finish till it all goes ,though hopefully you'll have recoated before that happens. The...

Advice regarding an eBay purchase (this is a current problem, so advice today is required- if possible)

I don't know the situation in NZ but in the UK you would have to pay import duties which the parcel delivery company collect before delivering. It's hard to predict how much they will be but often ten to twenty percent which can bump up the bargain price.

    Best stain for a lodge.

I've always found the sikkens range to be good quality finishes, both the water and solvent based ones. If you get a spray able stain you could do one elevation an hour and hvlp sprayers don't need much skill.

    Wood screws

I find the screwfix gold stews adequate for general work, stainless for outdoors, stainless is brittle though so likes to snap ,the torx head are generally better quality. For good work that might be seen you can't beat slotted brass, ideally in a cup with slots aligned.

    Groundfloor sole plate cutting

If the sole plate is just a nailing member and is fully supported I can't see a problem, you could put a noggin or some strutting above if you want.

    Slate slab

If there's more than one fixing per leg and they're well spaced you could use the screw in threaded sleeves, drill a hole larger than you would for wood and araldite them in. To drill slate use an hss on slowish speed,no hammer and you will need to grind the tip every few holes Alternatively...

Where to source wooden framing shims / wedges (UK)

If you want timber folding wedges you'll need three pairs per side so only 12 to cut. It won't take too long with a hand saw or jigsaw. I use plastic spacers mostly.

    Timber identification - Help please

Brown tropical hardwood? Probably meranti or sapele which are both used a lot in windows. Utile and iroko are also used for windows but utile usually shows yellow/ white streaks and iroko is more lustrous and will feel a bit oily

What species would be on your shortlist for a slab desk?

By apron I mean a plank on edge set a bit back from the front of the desk. I'd use something at least 75 x30mm in a straight grained hardwood.

What species would be on your shortlist for a slab desk?

Over an 8 foot span you'll need some support to prevent sag unless you go up to 3 inch thickness. Either a leg, an apron under or a more complex torsion box. Kitchen worktops will look like kitchen worktops but whatever timber you get you'll probably need to edge joint some boards . Ash and...

    Gloss finish

Rustin's plastic coating can give a good high gloss finish. Keep area and clothes dust free for best finish and clean brushes well between coats or better use new brushes,it flows quite well so brush marks disappear. It's an acid catalysed resin and a search will get other makes as well.
