Swimming Pool Stairs - Hardwood options

You can get hardwood decking boards in durable timbers but they'll all need an annual cleaning to keep slime and lichen free. I think plastic deck boards are a great maintenance free option and less slippery.

Using the right bits for beveling

A bearing guided cutter will work best and whatever profile you fancy. Small pieces can be done with router in a table but for larger work it's easy to use the router right way up.

Any Structural Engineers - Help re DIY Window Lintel

If you look in part A of the building regulations online there are span tables in the appendix. The table for purlin spans should give you an idea of what's needed. Whenever I have done timber framing the drawings have always shown boards ganged on edge over openings not stacked horizontally as...

    Formica and non-contact glue

I think the website does give details of suitable glued. I have used two pack resorcinol and powder UF ( cascamite) successfully in the past.

Electric house heating - any new tech savvy members?

You'll never regret spending money on insulation. There's the right type for various applications, if you want thin but effective and money is no object try aerogels. That looks an impressive joist span unless it's just the wide angle lens.

    Wood Identification

Though wood block flooring is traditionally high quality timber in old buildings, much of the newer stuff is made from saw mill odds and ends. The piece you have looks like oak sawn at an angle to the grain possibly a European or Asian Oak.

Electric house heating - any new tech savvy members?

Electric boilers make some sense for water heating though expensive but not much sense for heating a wet system. If you want to go electric there's electric radiators in various styles and underfloor mats which will at least save you plumbing costs, if not running costs

    RSJ column - replace

A structural engineer is needed then any competent builder could do the work. If a number of ub's are supported off the same wall it's unlikely the ends are fixed together so an engineer would need to design a system of joining all the beam ends then put in a column to support them. Depending on...

    Which PT????

The cheaper 260mm wide machines are probably all fairly similar and you can get good results with one. The things to check are that spares are still available, the condition of the rollers and if it has disposable etsa blades or resharpen ones. The rubber coated rollers can become very worn...

Best protection for outdoor teak bench

You can get good teak oil from yatchs chandler's. It will be expensive but the stuff that's designed to work outdoors all year in the med or tropics will have lots of UV resistance and will last in the UK. Starbrite is a good brand.

    Drying (a lot of) firewood

In my experience hardwoods particularly oak and ash are easier to saw and split when fresh and wet. Spruce and pine though I find splits better when dryer, I don't think it makes much difference to the chainsawing though.

    Oversized exterior plywood sheets availability?

It looks like phonoelic ply , the faces are tough grid textured plastic. I've never seen it in thin sheets but 3 x 1.5 m sheets are used for trailer bases at 18 mm thick and are available fairly readily and only proportionately expensive. A phone round your local outlets should get you an ok...

Advice on buying an emergency generator

Urban areas all have mains gas and in those areas electrical power is unlikely to be off for long. The op is in a rural area hence the suggestion of bottled LPG. In rural areas electrical lines are more likely to come down and may not be prioritized for repair ,so backup may be wanted

Advice on buying an emergency generator

Flogas have lpg generators on their site. £625 for 3 kw seems not too bad, probably available cheaper elsewhere as well. LPG seems, easier storage and less maintenance than a petrol unit.

connecting green oak beam to post

Why not just use a drift pin. A drift pin is a metal rod hammered into a predrilled hole. For that size timber I would use a 10" long 10mm piece of rebar or stainless threaded rod knocked into a 10mm hole. If you lubricate it with some glue it won't do any harm. Put the beam in place drill a...

    Epoxy in the winter

A fan and vents will only cool your box. I would suggest a tubular greenhouse heater is better than a light bulb if they are available or a warming mat or heater as used by reptile owners.

    Epoxy in the winter

22 centigrade seems quite warm. You could try a faster hardener, resin systems will have different speed hardeners for different temperatures and applications. Certainly easier and probably cheaper than making a box.

Advice on joist support for lean-to structure

I think you are misunderstanding skew nailing it's simply to knock in a nail at an angle, no need for a power nailer a hammer will do. With one nail each side of the rafter or joist it gives a good locked fix which will not pull apart. If you do use hangers and truss clips as we call them in the...

    Weatherproofing a Shed

Preservative treatments soak into the timber and prevent fungal decay and insect attack, they need to be applied to bare timber and as they don't penetrate all the way through need to be reapplied to cut surfaces. Paint, stains and varnishes sit on the surface and don't penetrate far, they...
