Workshop Fire Safety - Networked Fire Alarms

And both the fire mentioned in post #1 and one on UKW from some time ago has got me looking at the Fire Safety Stick extinguishers. 50 and 100 second burn times, open the door, toss one in and leave to suppress the fire are very interesting features. Italian innovation that has been getting...

    Harrison L5 3HP Lathe

Amen to that. I had to buy the 127 tooth changewheel as the second lathe came imperial only. It cost me a pound a tooth and I considered myself lucky enough to be able to buy a nice clean one at all !

Advice on running electrics to shed

I disagree somewhat with the above. There has been some rumour and confusion over it since about the 15th ed of the UK wiring regs but it is perfectly clear that flexible cable can, even should, be used in appropriate situations as part of the fixed wiring. Flex doesn't mean something is not...

Workshop Fire Safety - Networked Fire Alarms

The aico products look good. The 3000 series have the mains power with rechargeable lithium backup (upto 6 months) that I am looking for. They network by hard wiring, and have optional radio module that can be fitted in the detectors to allow them to network by radio (which is much easier as I...

Workshop Fire Safety - Networked Fire Alarms

I'm a member of a mailing list on "groups.io", the old yahoo.groups, used by owners of Harrison metalworking lathes to keep in touch and help each other out. A member of the mailing list recently shared the bad news that he lost his entire workshop including some heavyweight lathes and milling...

Advice on running electrics to shed

This is the key. As I see it, you could make that extension cable a length of steel wire armor, terminate it indoors at each end in metal clad boxes from Screwfix / Toolstation and feed it from a short length of 1.5mm flex fitted with a 13A plug. This isn't fundamentally any different from...

That is interesting to hear. Thanks for the comment.

Bandsaw question, what does this gauge represent?

Numbers are blade width in mm. The idea is to tell you to use a high tension for a wide blade, low tension for a narrow blade. It is out of calibration. Be aware that if you or any perious owner wind up the tension screw to the point where all the coils of the spring are compressed to touching...

    Harrison L5 3HP Lathe

Do a search on here. There is a long thread on the refurb of my L5 1950 vintage, with valuable contributions by @Fergie 307 who has a nice L5A. I've since traded up to a 20 year newer L5A myself. You'll find a serial number stamped into the bed at the right hand end and this can be used to...

    Bridgeport Mk1 2HP Milling Machine re-commissioning

With the extra resolution in the photos we can read the thermal overload settings. The topmost contactor / overload pair are feeding the spindle motor. The one below is set to supply a much smaller motor of around 150 Watts. That's most likely the X axis power feed.

Kitchen making and extraction hood height

Kitchen fitters put it in. I probably had some input when they did. It's an inch above my wife's head. 735mm above the worktop, 710mm above the burners of the gas hob. Both the hob and the hood are by Smeg and still going strong after 30 something years. Given our different heights I'd put it...

    Bridgeport Mk1 2HP Milling Machine re-commissioning

Spot on @Spectric . A modern phase converter typically doesn't provide a neutral so it is a good thing that the transformer takes it's power from between two of the phases and not phase to neutral. But yes, with all the primary options, the transformer could just be reconnected to draw from the...

Kitchen making and extraction hood height

Bottom edge of mine is right at the bridge of my nose, and I still sometimes head butt it leaning forward looking down into the pans. It's just below my eye line so I don't see the built in lights, but my wife is 6" shorter ....

    Bridgeport Mk1 2HP Milling Machine re-commissioning

We need photos with more resolution and more angles as there are wires obscuring important details. Esp the voltage label on the transformer tap hiding behind the red wire. It's old enough ! Brown things top right are a pair of 3 phase contactors each with a thermal overload relay on the...

    16 Amp Plug & Socket.....How Tight?

There are proprietary electrical contact cleaners and lubricants that will be safe. As @Spectric says, don't squirt any old random stuff in there because you don't want to introduce a resistance, not do you want to put in something electrically conductive.

Bosch FSN guide rail square cut guides?

That basically makes it a site tool for cutting upto 8" joists and rafters. It will be very handy in that role. Just a pity they didn't make it 2 inches longer to boost the capacity to 10" with negligible extra length in the overall tool.

    Vice lining?

Plain wood softwood traditionally I have a bit of good leather so I intend to try that on the next vice. I have two vices which have medium soft plastic jaws: one is a little record 2075 tabletop vice that is mostly used to hold metal without marking it. The other is an Elu superjaws with a...
