    DIY Powerwall / Battery

Excellent ! Who's your DNO and what energy tarriffs are you on please ? As you get a few months of use in with this, I'd be very interested to see your graphs if you feel like adding an update to this thread a month in, 6 and 12 months on, etc.

    Combination Pliers

If one of your uses is wire stripping, LIDL have just been selling some just like these for £3-4. There may be some left and they are great. 90% as good as the branded ones selling for £30+ at 10% of the cost.

    Combination Pliers

We never asked @niall Y What are your most common uses for combi pliers ? The main reason for dragging the thread a little of topic is they are a compromise tool. Depending on the use, there is often something better.

Cloned Number Plates...just a word of warning!

I had a parking dispute w Eurocarparks for leaving without paying for 10min 45 sec of parking. ANPR evidence. I spent that time queuing and trying to pay at 2 machines and online before leaving in frustration. Parking penalty charges are a huge earner for these companies. My first appeal was...

    Combination Pliers

At the shows when these first came out, the favorite demo was to hand you the pliers and ask you to squeeze the (smooth, flat) jaws closed on the edge of a flat piece of metal. "Now hold on while I try and pull it out of the jaws"... You can pull a guy off his feet and drag him along the floor...

    Combination Pliers

Ordinary combination pliers are not my go to for anything, but I use several other variants. Knipex, NWS, Lobster from Japan are preferred brands. What they have to get right is the strength and free movement of the pivot which cheaper brands rarely get right, and the heat treatment of the steel...

    Carvings on turnings?

Well done, thanks! Anyway, with that to inspire you, now you know that the combination of turning plus carving / texturing , and maybe even some colouring makes for some of the best work out there. Go for it !

For Sale 3 phase startrite 18-s-10 Bandsaw £150 Harlow

The plate on the back of the machine makes it absolutely clear. It's a 3 phase 415V bandsaw. Whether the motor is dual voltage and could be run off domestic mains with a vfd is unknown. You would need a photo of the motor rating plate. The transformer is irrelevant to the running of the...

    Carvings on turnings?

I hate to paste FB links because I avoid it like the plague but sadly the magnificent "the daniel collection" no longer has a proper website and only a facebook page. No - I just didn't try hard enough to find it ! Find the link further down. Every woodturner should know about this collection...

    Selling something....Valuation?

Ah. OK. I saw a vintage shaw guard - unsure of the brand - sell for about £100 on ebay within the last couple of years. Sedgwick planers have a shaw guard available. As new spare part those no doubt cost £200+. They could be adapted to other machines. Conceptually, these aren't very complex and...

    Selling something....Valuation?

Pussyfooting around it won't help. OK, this isn't a for sale thread and I won't let it become one. If you want to tell us what the thing is, and / or even include a photo or two, then if anyone here can point you to some historical price info, that's OK. This time out. Members can tell you by...

I've never used a sliding mitre saw before, but I've just bought one. Looking for safety/operating advice.

I have an instinct to stick out a foot and break the fall of things I knock of a worktop. I've saved quite a few pieces of crockery this way, not to mention tins and jars. I have a bad feeling that one day I may look down and find a kitchen knife where it shouldn't be !

    Drill guides

This thread was ultimately to blame for tempting me into buying a 2nd hand mag drill off ebay. I reckoned I would need to drill perpendicular holes in metal more often than wood. But a mag drill that didn't cost a whole lot more than one of those UJK drill stands could always be plopped down on...

    Obsession looks like...

Your good lady would have more to worry about if you spent the dollar on drink or baccy. Plane collecting must surely come low down on the list of vices !

    Myford Lathe

That looks like a nice lathe that will serve you well beyond your beginner days. I see you can move the belt between pulleys as well as it having variable speed. That's great. Good choice.

    Kity 619 - standard plug?

Yes, you're missing something :) An important part is the typically 5 to 8x inrush current. This is a brief but very big overload. But induction motors aren't resistive loads so P=IV doesn't work as you think. There's an additional current that flows in and out of these motors without being...

    Kity 619 - standard plug?

Actually, you can't. Not with the induction motors used in these machines. 4A / kW would mean you could run a 3.25kW motor off a 13A plug. You most definately can't. In my own experience, 1.5kW, maybe 1.8kW induction motors will run happily off a 13A plug. 2.2kW motors will sometimes run but...

    Any Snap-on experts on here

Let me re-write that: "A snap- on 3/8 rachet [may well be] as strong as [some] other other makes of 1/2 rachets, [but only some]." I'd avoid sweeping statements that are obviously wrong. It makes you look like a fanboy and then we start to ignore the good stuff you have to say.

    Machinery refurbishment

Here's your "how to" for the planer. The differences between your CP and the MB are minimal, it's just bigger. https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/threads/sedgwick-mb-planer-thicknesser-full-refurbishment.136008/
