Multi tools, huh! What are they good for?

I own a leatherman wave. Actually my second, I gifted the first to a colleague overseas who admired it and wasn't in a position to buy one. I find the wave a good size and the folded steel handles are more comfortable than many other bigger / earlier designs which matters if you need to squeeze...

Wood carving gouges vs. Wood turning gouges

No. Totally different. Simplifying. Wodturning chisels far stronger, heavier built to stand up to use on wood moving under power, made from high speed steel to retain sharpness longer and when the tool is heated by prolonged cutting. Tool and edge geometries designed for use on a lathe. Big...

    A bit Mad?!

I drove to work in Dubai once and there were foreign workers sweeping sand off the highways while the wind whipped it back on again even faster. Sounds like the same thing ....

    Work Shoes

I wear trainers in the workshop and have no second thoughts about doing so. I have boots and have been most grateful for them doing machinery projects with friends. When you have to coordinate with other people and one pushes or pulls when the other isn't expecting it, accidents are far more...

    First metal lathe advice

Those parts sound almost like watchmaker territory. Read about old lathes at www.lathes.co.uk awesome resource. Look at Emco lathes Read about Taig ( v small) Personally I'm not attracted to Myfords I wonder if the Denford machines sold to schools for teaching the concepts of CNC machining...

Machinery on Tracks -- Small Garage Project

Line the machine up between two doors so you can feed in and out. Or place it just inside a door so you have max depth inside the building to feed into. @deema 's advice is great but I wouldn't want to heave a 1.6T machine around on anything except a perfectly smooth, flat floor. Too much like...

4 pin converter 5 pin machine

If this chat is anything to go by, a Motorun would be an old Transwave static converter style. https://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/threads/motorun-phase-converter-help.130149/ The problem with those is that an autotransformer is used first to increase the voltage from 240V to 415 ish, and then...

    Boiler efficiency query

    https://www.heatgeek.com/condensing-boilers-efficiency/ Can you get it work at 50C flow, 30C return, as a starter for 10 ? 40 / 20 ? 35 / 15 ?

4 pin converter 5 pin machine

Industrial electricians, not domestic installers. The additional e-stop should be irrelevant. It could be something as simple as the machine was used in a shop where they had standardised on 5 pin outlets because some of their machines needed a neutral. Any that didn't were still fitted with 5...

Are we being ripped off by tool retailers?

Wooly terminology, my bad. I'm a novice at gears. I'm still trying to identify the gear that I need but it's a 17 tooth, 10" diametral pitch, imperial not ISO metric standard gear, pressure angle still to be determined. Figuring these out tends to require photograph or scan, enlarged, and a bit...

    Boiler efficiency query

My temptation would be to go open flow wth only the largest / most important space on the ground floor controlling the boiler. Then gradually reduce the boiler output over a few days to find a setting with a low return temp so you get longer run times at low power with good condensing. Has the...

4 pin converter 5 pin machine

A 3 phase motor needs L1, L2 and L3 connections and an earth (4 pins, 4 wires). It is a balanced load and it doesn't need a neutral. Even if wired star, the star point should have a net current of zero and doesn't need to be wired to anything outside the motor terminal box. That's a good thing...

Are we being ripped off by tool retailers?

Supply and demand ? Captive market ? Profit maximisation ? All that stuff. For commodity tools I think we have a good competitive market in the UK. Much dearer than the USA simply due to volumes and taxes, not generally worse than Europe, except for things made there. For niche products UK is a...

    Awkward Space Storage Solutions?

Old 1st gen dewalt toughboxes dw150 are only about £15 each these days. Some of the strongest boxes out there and they are airtight when closed. Very useful in a damp workshop.

Excellent counter arguments. Can't fault them. Measurements are needed, but not right now :)
