    table saw capacitor

A couple of points. It's a big motor according to the manual. 3kW and single phase. The photos in the manual clearly show a permanent split capacitor setup. That's single capacitor, connected in circuit all the time and no centrifugal switch (hurrah, because those are a famous cause of motor...

    Adjustable reamer chatter

Plenty of oil was a learning point for me with fixed reamers. Thinner oil helps flush away the fine shavings produced.

    The power of standardised nuts

Premium German small arms manufacturers Heckler & Koch, and also Austrian Glock, both feature polygonal barrels throughout their ranges of pistols for many years, though sized to match conventional round ammunition. 5, 6 and 8 sided bores according to the model and caliber. The classic HK P7...

Haggling on price - is it the done thing?

I'll offer the view that haggling has been the norm throughout the whole of the world for most of recorded history. Ultimately any buy/sell transaction is a negotiation. These used to be done one-on-one according to supply and demand and the circumstances of the two individuals in the moment. I...

    Router table build 0

Probably not, but I would just pull it through and cut it to a tidy stub. You have the skill to wire it so I imagine you would find it easy enough to replace the cord into the tool if you want to go back to handheld use in future. Or just put an inline plug and socket like a neutrik in the cord...

    What tree is this

Willow. One of the few plants even I can grow. Neighbours had one at the back, they got some lads in to chop it down. I was sad as it added a lot of green and movement to our view, but they tossed a 2'length of the trunk over to me and said just dig a hole and plant this. The willow happily...

Needing Advice Please - Circular Saw

So a table saw is best being bought as a table saw and not using one of these inverted ? Exactly right. There are very few inversion stands manufacturered by reputable companies and which do it safely. The ones that do are actually more expensive than a self contained table saw. The next...

Needing Advice Please - Circular Saw

Put these words into google. "circular saw blade 20mm bore" You'll get lots of results and a fair few at 180mm diameter. As James says above, your saw will quite likely have enough clearance to spin a 185mm dia blade safely. If you intend to rip planks, be sure to buy a 12 or 16 tooth rip...

    1 Million Kilometre Battery

CATL announced this increase in LFP battery life a few months ago. It will be great when it ripples down to household storage. https://fullycharged.show/episodes/the-end-for-teslas-megapack-introducing-catls-new-zero-degradation-energy-storage-system/

Has anyone made one of these?

I looked at this. I wrote a rant. I got over myself and deleted it. It's a stupid jig.

    Sharpening

Simplistically, CBN for sharpening high speed steel tools, diamond for sharpening tungsten carbide cutting tools. Diamond is harder than CBN, but CBN is a far better conductor of heat than diamond so in moderation, it can be used dry without overheating the steel. Don't use soft sticky stuff...

    Dovetails in softwood

It is 13 years old and you'd have found it easier/faster to check than to write the caveat above ... Nothing wrong with adding to an existing thread but sometimes a question is well past it's sell by date.

Haggling on price - is it the done thing?

This is why you don't waste time on chancers and the clueless. Their prices are unrealistic through ignorance or greed and they are never going to respond well to a fair price. If you are paying more than half price for anything used, take a hard look as you are potentially paying too much...

    SOLDERING SILVER TO BRASS

If you decide that electrical solder wil be useful to you in the longer run, watch out for the Warton label on ebay. I see part rolls of varied thicknesses listed for sale quite reqularly. Warton Metals are a reputable brand. A 37/63 eutectic solder is lovely to work with as it changes swiftly...

Haggling on price - is it the done thing?

If it's a lowish value item or one I think is already a good deal, I'll pay the asking price or not buy. Among the ordinary sales on the marketplaces, some things are listed by people who are simply clueless / hopelessly optimistic about the value of their stuff / or by out and out chancers...

    SOLDERING SILVER TO BRASS

Have you looked up the melting points of all the materials you are interested in ? You can melt brass with a map gas torch so there definitely the potential for problems. My chums and I have silver soldered brass parts together but not sterling silver.

    Awkward Space Storage Solutions?

I agree, the tstack boxes are much much more flimsy than toughboxes. Toughboxes you can stand on without a second though. Proportions are different too - tstack are narrower, more Systainer shaped. Like you, I prefer the latches of the 2nd gen toughboxes and best of all the packouts. They have a...
