Is there a definitive pillar drill - new or used - that is better than the Bosch PBD40 for the same money?

There are some things I know to be wrong in this little list, others I believe to be wrong. Do you have any reference sources to support any of it ?

    Woodturning Tools

I would not overthink it. Suggest you buy a 3/8" bowl gouge from the crown cryo range. Black handles. If you like it, you can buy the 1/2" next :) M42 is a type of "tool steel". It is intended for tools used to drill and cut metal, operating at high temperatures. Cutting and pasting : "The...

    Capacitor for Felder AF22

https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/film-capacitors/1353583 Should do the trick. RS aren't the cheapest but are usually quick. The one linked is a name brand and I think the specs match yours. Config is lead connection with a mounting stud so it should swap in without drama.

    Lathe Value/Where to Sell?

If I didn't already have something bigger, I'd bite your hand off for that. It is a very nice lathe for a model engineer.

    Lathe choice at £1000

I'm not sure £1,000 will get you a new lathe that'll last you 30 years. Take your time and watch ebay etc to learn 2nd hand pricing. I've seen vicmark lathes come up which are fine lathes. Simon Hope sells the KSD range of lathes made in Taiwan (?) and those look a nice lathe if you ever came...

Are we being ripped off by tool retailers?

Folkstone Fixings (FFX) placed into Administration

A heads up to all as many of us have bought from FFX : " On 20 September 2024 Jane Steer, Tim Higgins and Toby Banfield of PwC were appointed as Joint Administrators (“Administrators”) of Folkestone Fixings Limited (“the Company”). The Company is a tools and hardware retailer based in the...

Is there a definitive pillar drill - new or used - that is better than the Bosch PBD40 for the same money?

Crack on and buy it. There are numerous weaknesses with the drill, mostly to do with the light weight build. The column is a bit of commodity pipe, the injection mouldings are soft aluminium at best, etc etc. But. It has a powerful motor as small pillar drills go and that compensates for the...

The for sale rules require images. An important reason is for your buyers to judge the condition of what you are selling. I'll leave this in place for 24 hours while you provide them otherwise it will be deleted.

Drilling 17mm hole in mild st

3 > 6 > 17 should do The 3 only halfway through just to get everything on centre. Use a drill press if you can. This is the sort of job magnetic drills are made for. So easy with a rotabroach cutter.

    The Cheapest Energy So Far

All this chat prompted me to review Tomato lifestyle as well. Being self sufficient on solar most of the year, the interest was because of the 5p rate for those overnight hours when the solar drops off over winter. 5 hrs is more than long enough to fill my storage battery to take us through the...

Does a live centre need to spin?

Fair enough, but your "drive" centres will be typically be 2 prong, 4 prong or steb variants certainly not simple dead centres and your "rotating" centre doesn't have to be :)

    Folding sawhorse idea

If you've never used one, the commercial versions are good. Expensive obviously, but metal joints make for speed, strength and stuff like adjustable legs. I can vouch for toughbuilt, bora have similar, and I have a related product that tells me the dewalt yellow and aluminium trestles derived...

Does a live centre need to spin?

👍 Live centre has bearings and "nicer" to use. Dead centres simple, cheap, accurate. Dead centres are more precise and there are ways they may be used at either end or both of a metalworking lathe for precision work and for aligning the lathe.

MFT and Rail Square - my thoughts

My most used marking tools after the combi square are a good 600mm (and metre) steel rule and a veritas ruler stop. I set this to length and use it like a pair of parallel guides from the edge of my board to the back of the saw track - just one end at a time. Every time you move one end of the...
