Knock down Domino joinery. Great idea?

Visually it's a nightmare. Holes everywhere. If the disassembly is going to involve drilling out a glued dowel, and the dominos themselves are through drilled, why not make fully glued blind joints as normal and if you ever need to disassemble it, just use the domino jointer itself to drill...

    Chuck holding Steb Center

Absolutely. In fact, if safety is the concern, far better not to have the mass and added diameter of a chuck spinning around. A "dead" steb centre that does not incorporate any bearing fitted straight into the spindle taper is the way to go.

    Sedgwick CP planer query

If you have a #80 scraper plane, try a swipe or two over the planed surface. That tends to firstly show up the scallops from the cutterblock, then quickly knock them down.

Buying a fully electric used car

Just an observation : six out of the eight VFDs powering the machines in my workshop use vector control to boost low speed torque. These control systems have indeed been around for a while and are well proven. They are even used in electric skateboards :)

Buying a fully electric used car

Radio 4 yesterday. "You and Yours" The brightest, sparkling, 80 year old rang in and sang the praises of her electric. She was the best sales person for EVs you could possibly imagine and I think hers was a Hyundai. 2 callers from Wales both described their areas an EV charging desert, and the...

    Another lighting question

That looks excellent to me. I agree that panels make a good, maybe even better alternative but now you know and if one isn't bright enough, just get a second batten and install it parallel to but forwards of the first one. Thanks for showing us how it worked out.

    Another lighting question

In that length, you could probably get an LED batten up around 8,000 lumens even at 4000 Kelvin neutral white. (You get the highest outputs from cool white LEDs like your 6800K but personally I find them unpleasant). This would be a ferocious amount of light but if you divide the lumens by...

    Power sander dust extraction

If you have an M class vac already it should be fine. Absolutely start by buying a hose / hose end to fit whatever sander. Things you need from the dust extractor : Variable power because full suction can pull the sander down onto the surface too hard. Dialling down the vac is often helpful...

Anyone knows what this is for? Looks like a clamp?

My mother's (wooden) racket was always stored clamped in one of these. 👍🏻

Anyone made their own carbon brushes? (Plus scam alert)

I've done it once. For some no name cheap powertool - can't remember what - that came out of a supermarket or DIY shed. There was no chance of a proper spare so I just found something similar and oversize, then filed it down. It worked. On common powertools it's hard to imagine that there will...

    Tracksaw mix n match

Sharing some photos in case they are of interest. A year or two back I swapped from a Festool tracksaw to a Mafell but while I got the 2x1600mm mafell/bosch tracks to go with the saw, I hung onto my old Festool tracks because the Mafell saw has slots in the base to run on both types. It was...

    Wood id quiz

Nice little quiz. Thanks :) I've saved away both the photo and a snapshot of the answers above in case I'm ever lucky enough to be trying to identify the unusual ones in future. The laurel is interesting to me as I own a small penknife inlaid with box elder and that would have been my guess...

Robert Sorby Proedge tilting table bolts

Chances are high that it will be an absolutely standard coutersunk head machine screw with a hex socket. These are intended to be slackened and tightened by the user to alter the angle of lean of the whole belt assembly. So there will never have been any loctite. Pull one out and measure the...
