I have wondered if somehow adding an out-feed support roller would cure it completely As you say, remembering to support the outgoing wood is key.
All the professional machines I have used have had such a feature.

I've done exactly this job, but just one missing pin, as Peter suggested. Needed to nick it with a Dremel to snap it to length, set in place for depth with a smidgen of 5 minute epoxy.

We used tempered glass over the decorative tiling. Had edges ground round and two holes drilled to coincide with a tile grout line and fixed with stainless domed mirror screws. We filled the whole space, easy to keep clean.
