    Mobile Machine Base

I have these from Amazon fitted to the legs of my Axminster bandsaw which came with 8mm holes in the bottom of the steel legs because they a. raise the overall height by only 3" b. the entire diameter of the top roller bearing bears against the underside of the legs c. they each lock both...

    Tablet/phone charging

I have recently installed one of these in my caravan, fed from the 12V system. When conneced to my tablet, the screen shows 'fast charging'. Has big and little sockets and a digital volt meter, the primary reason I chose it. Hope this helps, if anyone is still reading this thread. Gemcoo...

Engineered wood flooring - concrete floor prep

Is not this sort of product laid on a form of thin dense green underlay with glued joints? That's how I did my 'study'. I used cork strips at the edges to absorb expansion. Perhaps you are overthinking this, if the substrates were OK for carpet, I'd vacuum up loose dust, give a coat of PVA...

    Combination Pliers

See the link below, pricey but can be found in second hand shops etc., the side cutters are indestructible, designed to cut spring steel and the parallel jaws are very useful. As used on 'The Repair Shop'.... www.maunindustries.com/Maun/Pliers

Lucky find at the tip (sory, recycling centre...)

It goes to 'Making Devon Better!' (Their exclamation mark) When I bought them, they were weighed on a digital scale on the counter. I asked the reason and I was told the computer adds it to the total weight of recycled materials. I asked about electrical equipment, as I could not see any...

Lucky find at the tip (sory, recycling centre...)

Stuart...they have a re-sale shop, but it doesn't stop them smashing hardwood table tops, crushing big pieces of ply etc. Phil, on second examination you are right! I rubbed some chalk on the stamping and looked at it in daylight.

    Joke Thread 4 (closed).

Sorry for the bad link, basically it says the Dutch pronunciation of Van Gogh is FVAn (with a short, more guttural 'A') then hOOgh so that the g becomes an aspirate h sound, and the gh sounds like the end of 'though'.

Lucky find at the tip (sory, recycling centre...)

The 15" x 2" plane had a delightful patina of yellow emulsion paint, even on some of the sole, mouth is small and unworn, and the iron is stamped 'A. ELDICK'. A little work with a scraper and now works nicely. The 044 has only one 1/8" iron, I naively thought I could source some more from...

Introducing 'Rocky', destined for baby Harriet, first cousin twice removed....(my cousin's granddaughter) An exercise to try out my new bandsaw, not really up to the aesthetic offerings above!

    Another table saw question

The arbor on the 7485 will not take a dado cutting stack. Small point but if you intend to do a lot of panel grooving/rebating for, say, fitting out a house with fitted wardrobes, worth considering. (I know there are other ways)

    Attention all wet shavers

This thread seems to go on and on! Memories... In the Navy of my day the onboard NAAFI sold '7-o-clock' blades in a green packet. The really piso {Maltese for tight-fisted} sailors would retouch them by sliding them around the inside of a tot-glass...

    Hinges in mdf

IMO the weakness is not in the 'holding' ability but in the lack of ability to resist splitting in what would pass as 'grain direction' in wood... Simply insert (6/8mm?) dowels through the thickness of the door panel in positions that coincides with the hinge screws. If you want to be fussy...

    Attention all wet shavers

If it takes you, say, ten minutes to shave every day, I reckon I have had about 3,500 hours more lying in time than most of you!

Wood burning stoves tested to destruction

Hhm! Interesting, we are seriously thinking of relocating to Dumfries and Galloway to be nearer our daughter in S. Lanarkshire. We visited Newton Stewart during our last house hunting visit, and are intending to have a 'burn it all stove' we can cook on too. Thanks for posting.

Measuring machine noise, effective soundproofing, etc.

"As an aside, the loudest natural sounds, probably, that we might ever encounter, are waterfalls, volcanoes and thunderclaps. In all cases, these are predominantly LOW frequency sounds, unless you're right next to them. The ear has a built-in protection mechanism for them too: it loosens the...

    Putty advice for sash windows

I hesitate to post this in such a pedantic fashion in such erudite company but feel I must .... Glazing sprigs should not be removed when the pane is set on a thin bedding of soft putty. Consult the link I posted earlier - examine the pointed end of the illustrated sprigs. It is not some...
