    Dining Table

Quick review - we left off with then posts shaped into an ellipse .. Time to turn that thick blocky base into a shapely, organic foot for the post. It needs to be said that I binned the first feet I shaped as they ended up too thick looking. I want slim. I realised that a reason for...

    portable chisel storage

Harry, the top layer of chisels are Veritas PM-V11 bench chisels with (mostly) custom Ebony handles (from the factory), and the lower layer are the first run of Blue Spruce dovetail chisels with (mostly) African Blackwood handles. Both get used regularly. Harold & Saxon chisels leave a bad...

    Attention all wet shavers

I grew a beard when Covid started, and use an electric trimmer to keep this short. However, I still wet shave my throat, and prefer an old razor with Feather blades for this task. These are made in Japan, a little more expensive than the average, but take and hold an edge extremely well. Highly...

SawStop, stops on contact with skin is coming to Europe soon!

Ed, much of the YouTubers are simply followers of fashion. Making videos is a fashion thing. how else does one explain the proliferation of identical topic videos and identical tools lining the rear if the workshop ..... green Festools, black SawStops, and red Woodpeckers. So the "in" tablesaw...

    Dining Table

Time to re-visit the dining table, and move in a new direction. I have design, this time, a trestle table. The design is aimed at complimenting the (DC 09) chairs. To do this, in part the table legs must reduce clutter, which is the advantage of a trestle table ... the legs are tucked out of the...

    David Charlesworth's Chisel Hammers

It is for hammering nails. Keeps the edges of the face away from the surface, and avoiding indentations cause by the edge of the hammer's head. Regards from Perth Derek

    portable chisel storage

James, I run workshops occasionally or teaching presentations at my local club, and am lucky enough to have set aside tools for these occasions. One day - it is my dream - my son will be interested enough in woodwork, and I will give him these boxes. The likelihood is that it will be his wife...

    US Election November 5th

If you do not comprehend that this is a religious war, and not a political one, then all comments are irrelevant. Hamas, along with all other equally radical Muslims, have only one aim, and this is to first erradicate all Jews from Israel and the region, then the world, and then move on to...

    David Charlesworth's Chisel Hammers

David used a gennou in the Daruma style, which is a broad head useful for chisels. This is the upper hammer/gennou, and weighs 375 gm. The lower, smaller head, weighing 225 gm, is also made by Tenryuu. I use that one mostly. Regards from Perth Derek

    portable chisel storage

I am not sure that you could use these ideas in a box, however these are drawers (in a cabinet under my bench) and may offer some inspiration. Each drawer has a sliding tray. Top level ... Lower level ... Top level ... Lower level ... Regards from Perth Derek

    Dining Table

Part 1 - design and construction The brief is to build an 8-seater dining table to replace our existing 6-seater. We will retain the 6 vintage bentwood chairs, and I recently completed 2 (DC 09) chairs for use as carvers. Our taste in furniture runs towards the minimalistic, the clean lines of...

Breaking the edge (Arris) on curved pieces

A block plane or spokeshave is the tool for the OP's task. However there is a place for the #65 - variations on very narrow chamfers really are unlikely to be noticed. Variations on wide chamfers will be noticed and this could degrade the appearance of a important build. Regards from Perth Derek

Breaking the edge (Arris) on curved pieces

The Stanley #65 chamfer shave is designed to do this ... ... but I would simply use a block plane, ideally with a higher cutting angle to avoid tearout. Regards from Perth Derek

    *Small* electric screwdriver?

I have used one of these around the house over several years. No drilling, but just a fantastic cordless screwdriver. Ergonomic and enough torque. Regards from Perth Derek

    Prepping for a new start

With the chairs done, next on the agenda is an 8-seater dining table. One of the pleasures in being an amateur is that I get to enjoy the time between builds as much as the builds themselves. My question for all is "what do you do between builds, or in preparation for a new build?". The table...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

I posted a fuller set of photos in the project forum. Here are just a few for those that do not go there. Two carver chairs in Rock Maple (to be followed with a new dining room table) ... Regards from Perth Derek

    DC 09 Chairs - completion

Fitzroy, they are pretty comfortable. The seats are tilted appropriately, and there is enough scoop. I did a lot of shaping on the back, getting the right angle and amount of flat. There are many details like this that I have not included in the build - just too many finicky bits and pieces for...

    DC 09 Chairs - completion

The background is the decision to build a larger dining table, one to seat 8 as opposed to the 6 as with the current table ... Since the new table will have a contemporary, modern design, the carver chairs would fit with this, and the existing vintage bentwood chairs would blend in. My wife...

    First Workshop - advice needed!

If I had a small workshop and was starting out again, my choice of (table) saw would be either a tracksaw on a MFT, or the Festool portable tablesaw (which is double the price of the Axminster, but has superior dust collection - one of your priorities - and a sliding table). An MFT with a track...
