    Dining Table

What a thing of beauty that is Derek. Thank you for documenting the build, as a novice woodworker, it's so useful to see the planning and thought processes through a build like this.

    Cleaning up a Coronet Major

First step done, cleaned up the main bar. A finishing sponge and wd40 followed by brake cleaner and some paste wax, everything slides smoothly now. I managed to get the centre out of the tailstock piece, it was solidly gummed in there. the taper has some rust and something that looks like...

    Cleaning up a Coronet Major

After my other thread about the chucks, I figured I'd start a new thread to cover everything I'm doing to clean up the Coronet Major I've been given and keep everything in one place. There's bound to be questions and it seemed best to have a single thread instead of creating new ones each time...

Lathe chucks, what do I have here?

@Peri Thanks for the suggestion. I might try the wire brush technique or some 60 grit but I think you're probably right path just getting a new one is a lot less hassle. First I have to change the belt and get the lathe cleaned up, should get that done in the next few days.

Lathe chucks, what do I have here?

@Robbo3 Thanks very much for that, good to know I'm on the right track. The two chucks with springs are a type I've not seen mentioned in books or in an online search for 'wood lathe chuck' but it seems as though they tighten down when you turn the outer part of the chuck. Looks like I...

Lathe chucks, what do I have here?

I've been given an old Coronet Major lathe, various attachments and a pile of various turning tools. I'm sure I'll have a bunch of questions as I get it working and set everything up but to start with. I'm cleaning the lathe up and will sort through the tools and post some photos and questions...

Question for owners of Coronet lathes

Having been given a Coronet Major with a variety of attachments, I'm interested to hear how many of you leave the various attachments attached. Most of them have sharp spinning blades running whenever the machine in running and there's not much by way of guards etc on these things. Mine needs...

    ADHD and Mental Health

Yes, there’s a certain amount of grieving that you go through for what might have been but it’s also important to think about the ‘superpowers’ that adhd gives you. The most important thing for me has been learning to be kinder to myself about some of my shortcomings. For years I’ve felt shame...

    ADHD and Mental Health

I was diagnosed 3 years ago at age 55, still processing how different my life looks from this new perspective and how obvious so many things now seem and how much easier so much might have been. I hope you’re able to find a medication that works for you soon.

Choosing the most appropriate grinder for this job

doing more research and have found mention that using a hard steel on a loaded can wheel is a good way to clean it. Also, found this reference from early last year to issues with Axminster slow speed grinder and their can wheels where they apparently say they've got problems with all their stock...

Choosing the most appropriate grinder for this job

I'll take a look at them, thanks. Been doing some reading on this and most of what I've read say that tool steel seems to be fine but not regular mild steel etc. I was assuming, perhaps incorrectly, that any turning tools would have been made using tool steel similar to chisels and plane blades...

Choosing the most appropriate grinder for this job

Thanks, I'll give that a try when I have some time to make something suitable.

Choosing the most appropriate grinder for this job

Hi all, I've been an occasional hobby woodworker for years but for the past decade or so, I've mostly just been fixing things and making stuff around the farm rather than doing more interesting or fine woodwork. I have a modest workshop and my sharpening gear has been a diamond plate and...

Can anyone recommend a decent make of stepped drill bit?

Update: the hole saw from Amazon arrived and did the job nicely. Ignore the mess on the end, that’s one that had been part drilled before and when I tried to drill with the new bit I forgot to put a block of wood underneath so that the centre drill bit would have something to bite into and keep...

Can anyone recommend a decent make of stepped drill bit?

Thank you all for such helpful replies, I really appreciate the advice. I’ve ordered the TCT cutter from Amazon simply for speed and will let you know how I get on with it in a few days.
