    Laptop for my dad

Netbooks are pretty good (small, lightweight, decent battery) but often lack DVD players. Some come with a 3G slot built in, thus avoiding the problem of breaking/bending which is a potential issue with sheets getting caught around them. here's a useful buyers guide with reviews...

    Jigsaw woes

I'll try a stiffer blade and see what happens. If that fails, a new jigsaw will be in order. Cheers.

    Jigsaw woes

I've got a slight problem. Well, several, but you don't want to know about most of them. I've got an Aldi jigsaw, and when I try to use it with a fence to get a parallel cut, the blade warps towards the fence. This happens with 9mm MDF or inch thick pine. If I cut freehand this doesn't happen...

    New lathe and power problems

Right - I've tried it plugged into the other side of the cellar, exactly the same thing happens. Plugged it in upstairs (in the kitchen) and the only thing that tripped was the in-line RCD on the extension. Both times there was no load on the lathe. Make of that what you will.

    New lathe and power problems

Speed is set to minimum. Here are a couple of pictures of the fusebox for those who know their electrical bottom from their elbow.

    New lathe and power problems

No joy. The moment I turn the lathe on, the power trips now. I suspect that the extra load from the beloved being home is too much for it now.

    New lathe and power problems

It's a modern RCD, but it supplies all the wall sockets in the house. I've got an extension with an RCD breaker built in, and a power meter, so I'm going to stick them both in and hope. I've also been informed by the beloved that the smell of marzipan from the laurel is due to the cyanide...

    New lathe and power problems

Hi there. I took delivery of my new mini lathe today (Axminster AWVSL) and I've set it up in my cellar. 5 minutes into trying it out, the power trips to all the sockets in the house. I reset the breaker and try again. Another few minutes and the power cuts again. This goes on for a few more...

    All sludged up?

We had our boiler replaced last year and we got the plumber to do a power flush of the radiators, but the one in the bathroom just refused to do any more than get lukewarm. The plumbers advice was to buy a new one as it would be much less effort. Turns out he was wrong, not replacing it at all...

    Beginners workshop

Hi there. I live in Tameside, near Manchester, in a two up, two down terrace with a communal back area and a cellar under the living room, where we keep all our camping, climbing, and caving equipment, two push bikes, a weights bench and the wine rack. Apparently I'm not allowed to dig out the...

Inches, feet, millimeters... what's the difference. Of course, this could explain why so much stuff I make doesn't actually fit :)

    Beginners workshop

Hello there. I've been lurking for a while, but thought it would be nice to actually make a post or two. I'm pretty new to the whole woodworking malarky, but I'm enjoying the process of turning wood into sawdust. I'm hoping to make planters to keep the beloved happy in the garden, and also...
