    Thanks for all the information. I was told it was mahogany and that's what it resembles most in the identification pictures, but that point about a turnip grain in sapele has got me doubtful now.

    Good on you. It took me the best part of 30 years to start appreciating the beauty of wood, so you've got the drop on me. Keep posting videos and I might learn something.

    reclaimed mahogany

    I've recently bought a stack of timbers, 5" x 3" and about 11' long. They are reclaimed from a 1950s McAlpine show farm and look to be Brazilian mahogany. I won't say what I paid for them and I have plans to make coffee tables with them but I'm curious to know what the going rate would be for...
