should i just bite the bullet and get a sorby pro edge?

I struggled with a bench grinder for 2 years and then bit the bullet and bought a pro edge and was getting a perfect grind within 5 minutes. Excellent bit of kit, highly recommended.

    Lathe 4 Jaw Chuck

Both the ones you linked to are independent chucks in that all the jaws are opened/closed independently from each other. What you need is a scroll chuck where the jaws all move at the same time thus centering any object automatically. I've never heard of anyone using an independent chuck for...

    Lifes a Beech bowl

Here's mine, 4 3/4" x 2 3/4". Spalted beech, very punky but it sanded out. Much prefer the shape and colour of yours though.

    Lifes a Beech bowl

Wow! That's one **** of a coincidence, I've just turned almost the exact same bowl this afternoon, punky spalted beech and almost the same shape. I'm just have a quick cuppa then back out to the shed to wax and polish. I'll post mine here when done. Love yours by the way.

    Which show?

Yep you're right From Oban its 40 miles shorter and a whole 12 minutes quicker to Harrogate than from Aberdeen to Harrogate. We won't count the 1 3/4 hours that it takes me to get to Oban though :D :D

    Which show?

Thanks guys Its looking like Harrogate then. Distance wise, everywhere is quite a long way from Mull so its a trek anyway. Will probably do it over 3 days/2 nights so there's no rush and can visit a few places/shops on the way back.

    Which show?

I'm planning on getting to a show at some time this year to get a bit of inspiration and probably buy something new and shiny. Which show do you guys recommend? So far I'm looking at Harrogate in November, not a massive distance away from me on the isle of mull (well 5 1/2 hours but its all...

    Burn writing on your work

Having read this I've just designed and ordered one. Well I say just but I've had to get my head round Google sketch up in order to design my 3d brand. It was reasonably easy and would have been even easier if I wasn't trying to keep it to less than 3cm across. Anyway, I'll update again when it...

Playing with some prunings of an unusual wood. (Answered)

Turned up at my mothers at Christmas only to find that she had had her fig chopped down an had let the neighbour take the trunk for firewood! Wasn't the biggest of trees but the trunk was a good 6".

Allen screw removal from chuck jaw

Indeed this was a question I asked myself after I'd knackered the head :D

Allen screw removal from chuck jaw

I used a makita impact driver, and they rounded off. Still surprised at how delicate they are, Ive used the impact driver on many different fixings would have expected them to hold up better than they did.

Allen screw removal from chuck jaw

Got exactly the same problem myself, was quite shocked at how easily they rounded off. My plan is to start by driving a torx bit into the rounded hole and see if I can get that to grip, if it works it'll be quicker and less faffing than drilling it out, if it doesn't work then no harm done...

    Drive Centres

Thanks for the replies folks I think I'll be going for the nova chuck spur drive, the seb centre has always looks interesting but the budget just won't stretch that far. I'm sure I also read the other day that the licence was running out on the steb centre in a few months so I'll wait and see if...

    Starter jaws for chuck

Hi Bob Any chance of popping out to the shed and clearing this up once and for all. As someone who has both chucks, and presumably jaws for both could you test compatability both ways, I.e. sn2 jaws fit the Dakota chuck (which one do you have?) and also that Dakota jaws fit the sn2. Thanks Bob

    Starter jaws for chuck

I was always lead to believe that the sn2 and the Rutland's chucks had different jaw mounts. Can you confirm that they are interchangeable as a second chuck would be handy and a Dakota to go alongside the sn2 would fit the budget
