    Fraction calculator

I dont understand why we have to use mm when cm and a decimal point is far easier to read/take in. You don't say I drive 5000 metres to work each day, you'd say its 5km because its easier to understand

    Fraction calculator

I had an app like this when I was living in Canada as frations made no sense to me, but after a while I found using imperial easier than metric. Now I'm back in the UK I feel like I'm having to re learn metric. Millimetres are too long winded and I find myself having to take a moment to actually...

    Meranti

Thanks all, some good info there, but I'm thinking I should just go with the tried and tested oak and play it safe - I don't want to have to replace them all again in 2 years.

    Meranti

Thanks. My research didn't really bring up any possitives either for this wood, but thats what the window shop said they use, which makes you question their quality! I've tried pricing red grandis, but Timbmet and Lathams have minimum order cost or high postage cost, so thats out of the...

    Meranti

I called in to my local timber merchants the other day to price up oak for a window job I have coming up, while looking through their yard I poked my nose into their joinery shop where they specialise in windows and doors and asked what they'd recomend to make the windows from (which will be...

    Bosch Multi Tool- Any good?

Spend a little more and buy a Makita for £80, 3 years warranty and a reliable tool. I made the mistake of buying the Bosch and it died for no reason - buy cheap, buy twice

    Casement window wood selection

Thanks for the replies, but please don't tell me I should turn the job away and go for something else. Before returning to the UK I was a finishing carpenter in Canada and mostly worked on multi million dollar houses, and among other things I specialised in custom banisters for all kinds of...

    Track Saw on a Budget

Maybe a little late, but I have a Worx Pro track saw. Cheaper than the big brands and does the job perfectly. Its also compatible with the Makita and Festool tracks. I think I paid £80 for the saw and £25 for a 1500mm track. For occasional use I can't fault it.

    Casement window wood selection

I've been asked to make a couple of replacement casement windows. My question is - once I've purchased the timber (not sure whether they are going to go the soft wood or hard wood route yet) do I need to let it sit/season before I start cutting it, or will it be stable enough off the shelf? The...

    land prices

According to Wikipedia, there is almost double population in the Uk than there is in the whole of Canada. The Uk has 94,000 sq miles (ish) and Canada has aprox 3,800,000 sq miles of land. Thats why is so expensive in the UK, there is more demand for what little space they have.

    My shop

I was lost in there at first because it was bigger than I was used to from the UK, but it doesn't take long before you fill it with junk. I also have 2 15' square sheds  Dust extraction is on the cards, but again, as time and funds allow. Heres my gloat - I'll post up some pics of our...

    You can't beat British justice.

Thats why were moved to Canada, the UK is falling apart and it seems that unless you are an immigrant, the government doesn't care. From start to finish it took us nearly 3 years to get our visas to allow us to emigrate here and we had to prove we had enough money in the bank, also we weren't...

    Close Call.

Ouch, but lucky! Lesson learned! I was cutting some ply with a jigsaw years ago, was only making a quick cut and thought I'd speed things up and not put it in the vice. Making sure my fingers were clear I proceeded, and cut right into my fingers - they were longer than I thought haha. I also...

    My shop

This is my shop, it's around 35' square although I have to share it with the car this time of year as it's starting to get cold and it's not too nice going to work in a cold car when it's 25 below, so I move everything over to make space for it so it can share the heat in there too :roll...

    Router Station

I had a couple of spare hours this morning, so decided it was time to use up some stock I had kicking around and make a new router station. I bought a used table saw with a load of other tools from a lady who was selling her late husbands workshop tools. I didn't actually want the saw, but when...

    Hello

Thanks guys. Already read lots of good stuff on here, especially in the jigs section. I'm about to embark on a couple of peices for a customer this week. If I remember, I'll take a whole load of photos and post up my progress, but don't hold me to it as I have a rubbish memory

    Hello

I'm in Windsor, Ontario - also known as the a**hole of Canada, there isn't a whole lot of anything round here apart from car factories and endless flat fields.

    Hello

Thanks for the welcomes. So did I! This part of Canada is fairly treeless though, so I suppose dragging them over from the west coast cost a fair bit seeing as its a few thousand miles away. I forgot to mention, I'm an expat from Devon :)
